Hi there

I'm sorry to say that these are not very good looking kois!Crazy Are these 'test' kois before you go for the better ones! Don't mean to offend but I can get these at around RM3-RM5 for a 15cm koi.

Pondwan2b,

If you are new to koi, these koi are ok for you to start the hobby. The important thing is to continue to read and learn from this web, books and magazine, and as you know more about koi, you will learn how to appreciate them better.

Most of us have make mistakes in the beginning part of our hobby by choosing not so ideal fish, but as we get better at it, the fish we pick will get better. :)

Happy Koi Keeping.

Well, i guess most of us have seen better grade kois.

i personally feel you should also consider medium range kois like those in the region of RM 20 to RM 30 per fish as they will grow up to be nicer kois.

I am not an expert, but i would like to suggest the sharpness of colours, they called Hi , Sumi, Kiwa be considered . Body shape like torpedo, pattern on the dorsal fins to be well balanced and not distorted like the ones you have.

But like what the chinese used to say. - one stock one price - so, not so nice kois means not so pricey also. Did you read about the thread on the RM 25,000 purchase of four kois- that should give you an idea.

meanwhile, use these kois as experiment kois for good koi-keeping. Once you want to upgrade you can also let these kois go free in the stream and that will bring you good luck also. Nice kois see attachement

Mattloui,

I agree with you totally. I always believe that instead of filling a pond with 50 cheap fishes, it is better just to use the same amount of money to buy 8-9 good ones and grow them to jumbo size. Any one who has seen a pond with jumbo high quality beauty will not look back again.

Pondwan2b,

Things like body shape and patterns can be a little hard to tell at the beginning and it grows with experience.

However, color is rather easy. First, you need to be able to identify different type of koi. For beginning, I would recommend to start with Kohaku first (red and white koi). The red has to be bright and thick red and the white has to be snow white. The most important thing is that color has to be distinct. If it is red, it is red, there is no such thing as pink or orangy or yellow. The divider between the color (e.g. red and white) called the kiwa have to be distinct. There is no such thing as mixing white with red and becoming pink.

Below is an example of a Champion Kohaku. Can you see the clear divider between the Red and White?

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Patrick

Pondwan2b,

The good news for koi keeping is that there are so many color to choose from....whatever your preference is.

Having said that, have you visited a really nice pond with all the high quality koi? If you see it, you will know what I'm talking about. There is nothing nicer than having a pond of bright red kohaku swimming around.

Cheers,

Patrick
