Hi needucho, I wouldn't be hasty calling the traditional showa a male. In fact, looking at its pectoral fin I'll say there is a good chance it could be a female. There are a few points I would like to bring up with regards to this koi. 1. Granted the traditonal showa has a body relatively thinner than the kindai, but take a good look at its head structure. It is decently broad and long, but followed by a lean back that appears shrunk after the pectoral region. This koi isn't genetically thin, it is undernourished for a prolong period that has inevitably affected its growth and hence its conformation is compromised. 2. Slow growing koi tend to hold their colours better as their scales do not stretch as fast. This is quite obvious from the traditional showa case.. its sumi is tightly packed and hiban is thick. As mentioned above the traditional showa looks underfed, I wouldn't be surprised its colour appears stronger. Personally, I would choose the traditional showa to experiment with its growth and development. IMHO, the kindai while appearing better built, has visibly limited "development" potential. However, I wouldn't pay USD2,907 for this traditonal showa... for this kind of price you should be getting a tosai of higher quality than these 2. Cheers, Dennis
