0.o late hatchers Can't Post

Currently I'm in a situation where I have a batch of fries grown to 2 inches or more now.
But today since my adult kois seem unwilling to go the surface for a few weeks while now, I couldn't even get them to come up with their favorite food.
being worried I pulled up the bucket of plants they were living under and I realized they were protecting a bunch of eggs from the fries.

Now I'm sure on what to do with this batch of eggs, I don't have anything to contain them in
and if they hatch in the pond will the bigger fries eat them?
will the adults eat them?Shocked

What to do?

P.S. I'm pretty darn sure they're eggs
-Froathy water
-Occasional kois splashing around
-Also i saw little clear (very small, size of a err... this o can't think of anything else at the moment) ball-like eggs in the plant bucket I pull up
-Also one of my kois look pregnant

Zero123...

Very unusual sounding....but they much be looking after them or something....unusally the adult koi will participate in eating the eggs and fries but not protect them...

I guess if the adults are not eating the bigger fry then they may not eat the later batch....but hard to say....

If you're afraid of them being eaten, best to hold them in a small tub or tank...if you don't have anything....then i guess just let them be and see what happens...Tongue

Thanks

With regards, Jarvis

I agree I too think it's strange
many people told me koi's will eat their eggs after spawning,
but for some reason they seem to be chasing away and of my recent fries when the get close to that plant basket.
that seems like protective behavior to me.
i'm at lost as to what to do with this batch i might just let them hatch in the pond since i don't have any container right now.

Zero123...

And the adults are not eating up the earlier batch of fry??? amazing!!Cool

I would leave them as is if I were you....since handling the eggs would be more risky and the parents are so protective...

No the adults aren't eating up my fries at all I'm surprised because people warned me to be careful that.
I think you are right I'll be leaving the eggs in there.
thanks Jarvis.

Adult Koi will graze heavily on newly laid eggs, but they don't eat fry. Juvenile Koi that have not reached sexual maturity will eat fry, but mature adults will leave them alone. It seems the Juveniles see any food as food, and small fish as competition for food, so they gobble them up. Mature adults are reproducing and for them fry are the next generation assuring survival of the species, so they are left alone.

Re: [s_clan] 0.o late hatchers [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm planning on taking a few pics soon but I think I should go borrow one of my friend's digital camera because mine is old and it sucks. I'm not too sure if the eggs are still there(fires may have eaten them) because recently my dad bought another batch of fries because he saw some he really liked Unimpressed (when I say some I meant a few hundred) and now I gotta worry about over population of the two ponds Frown.

But I'll take some pics some times soon and show you them my fries are now at least 3 inches I believe. So I'll be happy to post some pictures when I get them

Thanks for the info larz1
I'm still very inexperienced when it comes to raising kois and I feel a bit better knowing this.
however i do wonder if fries about 3 innches might eat eggs that the adults lay?

Jarvis, I regret to tell you that I will not be able to take pictures of fishes to show you.
Because the only camera I have is quite old and is only 3 megapixels , therefore all the pictures I took with it don't show the fishes in a clear form actually you can hardly see the fish at all. Also my so called buddies don't want to lend me their camera apparently

However if i manage to get my hands on a decent camera I'll reply again.
