Aquarium Koi Fry Can't Post

Hia

Our family has a koi pond, and we moved a large bunch of eggs indoors during this summer and proceeded to hatch them. These eggs were given to us by a good family friend who got me into koi. His tank has one very large butterfly koi, and 8-10 of assorted japanese variety. Judging by the largest fish, im guessing they might be butterflys.

We've go about 75 koi in two separate tanks, ranging from 3/4 inch to 2 inches. Periodically we'd crop out the deformed ones. Now that it's been just about a month and a half it's nearing time to cull. But the problem is... which!? To say we know entirerly what we're doing is a complete lie, so I might as well ask someone who knows that they are doing.

The biggest problem i see is that they are all so bland in color. with the acception of about 10 with black tops, the rest seem to be all yellow or silver in color...but, no reds. now on to the good stuff

more pictures if you so request

so... what do we keep?

I'm no expert either....but for now, I personally would only remove the ones with deformities. Like broken back bones, weird fins..etc.
They are still pretty young, and the colours probably won't be showing until they are a bit bigger. Just be patient and see. Who knows...if you start culling the ones with good bodies now, but lack color..they could actually be future champions! What a loss...hehe.

Good luck mate.

Hi, I would agree with love_koi ,its important to cull any with deformaties and to seperate the larger ones from the small ones as they can be canniblistic even if you provide plenty of food, however, most breeders tend to cull the light coloured fish and hold on to any with dark markings as these are the ones that usually develop colouring later on. My opinion is, if the fry has no deformaties and is showing promise then it deserves a chance to further develop, if things dont turn out the way you expected you can still cull at a later date. Remember they are your fry and you can keep what you wish ther are no hard written rules.

Good luck and hope you have bred a grand champion....

Some general guidelines:

1) The ones with dark patches or patterns on them, will be just that. May become black and white or have several patterns and colors.

2) The ones that are goldish or yellowish in color are most likely Ogons.

3) The ones that are White will most likely be just plain white fish.

4) The ones that are dark all over most likely will be magois or chagois.

5) The ones that look transparent but looks pinkish inside are the ones that may develop later into kohakus. Kohakus are genereally the last ones to develop and are the weakest of all.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards
Bran

Christian, welcome to the koi forum and congrats on your 75 baby fry. We also have 74 koi fry and are raising them inside also. We also have a variety of colors and patterns. We figure this way,if this is your first time and you have the space to raise these fry, keep them till you can really see what colors and patterns you have, you may be surprised.

We are learning something new every day and we figure they made it this far,I'm sure someone would love to have them in their pond. I know some will say culling is neccesary,I know I can't do it, Best wishes with your Koi .Likdaor
