Baby Koi - culling Can't Post

I have my first batch of baby Koi (20-30 that I can see) in a 700 gallon pond. I know the pond cannot sustain that many. Are there places that will take them?

If I have to, what is the most humane way to destroy them (that is, if I can bring myself to). Would it be ecologically irresponsible to put them in a large lake somewhere?

where abouts are you? if you are in canada i would take all the young ones off you mate.

let me know, you dont want to put them in a lake, and you could get in trouble with the law for doing that.

but if you want to get rid of them i will take them off your hands.

cheers

If you are not in CanadaShocked

Try a botanical garden or maybe a restaurant, shopping center, hotel that has a pond or super large fountain to put them in.
They'll put in one of those 25 cents for 3 pellet fish feeders and make a fortune off kids and the koi wont starve.

If you ARE in CanadaCool but far away from Mike, or cannot get rid of them, the humane way is wait for winter ( in about 2 more weeks), and they'll be popsickles in no time... Tongue

I am in New Jersey. We don't get as cold as Canada, but I'm thinking that you're right - they might not survive the winter.

Can you tell baby Koi from baby Comets when they are only 1/2 - 1 inch? I do have C comets in the pond along with the 7 Koi. I thought the odds were greater that they were Koi, but I could be wrong.

not to sure if of you would be able to see the differance with them being that small., if you have a magnifing glass you could see if they have wiskers. but not to sure about that. i keep my comets and koi in different ponds.

Just a thought.... If you have Koi and Comets in the same pond/tank then it IS possible for them to cross breed resulting in ugly looking offspring.

I beleive the best way to cull fry is to place them in a bowl of cold water containing Ice, death is then quite humane and rapid

Kind Regards Dave

Re: [DMW(UK)] Baby Koi - culling [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you. This was the information that I needed and no-one had shared. I was considering Vodka (for both me and the fish) but this sounds better. I appreciate your taking the time to just tell me what I need to do. For this batch (actually, batches) I have found 2 places that are willing to take "free fry" and some friends with ponds who want fish. And now I'm prepared to do what I have to do with the rest. I'll just pretend it's an early Winter. Thanks again

By the way, some of them are pretty funny looking. It's obvious by the size that they have been spawned in at least three different timeframes. Some really look like Comets but the funny-looking ones (okay, ugly) might be a cross. Does that really happen?

Re: [jw4467] Baby Koi - culling [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi jw4467, yes Im affraid cross breeding does really happen between Koi and Comets though not Goldfish and Koi for some reason. Im not sure if the offspring would be fertile when they mature as the usual norm for hybrids is to be sterile.I cannot expand further on this as I really dont have the answers.Glad I could assist with your culling dilema, though vodka sounds a nice way to go Im sure it would be best to cull the fry with ice and then you can have the fishes share to drown your sorrows afterwards, nice with a little orange added.

Good luck and remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder, is ther such a thing as an ugly fish or are they all handsome critters that deserve a chance to thrive in our ponds?
