Hi LadyBlak kois are triggered to breed when they are moved to a new environment, or experience a temperature change, or when new fishes are introduced. So it depends on where you are located, as far as temperature is concerned. You can be easily deceived by looks alone when sexing a koi, you have to inspect the anal area and its quite accurate to feel the outer gill for roughness, like going thru fine sandpaper. these are nodules formed on the male koi which are used to rub against the female during the courtship ritual. The easiest birth control method is to separate the males from the females. Sstart worrying when your kois are more than 1.5 year-old. Hope this is useful. Regards, Micky
