Birth control??? Can't Post

Holy Smokes! I've been reading some posts here and in my books it talks about thousands of koi fry being hatched all at once. EGADS! I have 5 kois, one comet and two large goldfish. It is unlikely that there isn't a mating pair or two in the bunch. So what on Earth do I do!? My pond is 450 gal, and I'm just a beginner, It breaks my heart to think about tossing baby fishies out of the water or giving them to the petstore for *ulp* feeder fish. Is there anything I can do to stop the 'egging' and such? I have one that is a 7 incher now and has a swollen belly, (not sure it's an egg thing though) How do you know if it's a girlfish?

I'm happy with my 8 fish, I don't need or want and can't handle anymore.

Um Vets don't spay them do they:) or are there any of those little tiny plastic 'pants' to put on em or a chastity belt perhaps:)

I'm going to have nightmares of billions of fishies in my pond all at once!

Re: [LadyBlak] Birth control??? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi LadyBlak
kois are triggered to breed when they are moved to a new environment, or experience a temperature change, or when new fishes are introduced. So it depends on where you are located, as far as temperature is concerned. You can be easily deceived by looks alone when sexing a koi, you have to inspect the anal area and its quite accurate to feel the outer gill for roughness, like going thru fine sandpaper. these are nodules formed on the male koi which are used to rub against the female during the courtship ritual. The easiest birth control method is to separate the males from the females. Sstart worrying when your kois are more than 1.5 year-old. Hope this is useful.
Regards, Micky
