Can koi spawn in cold weather? Can't Post

I have a pregnant 4-5 year old Sanke, I don't really want to make her spawn because lack of space for the frys but afraid it become cancer if she call eggs too long, it's November here southern California, not too cold but not that warm either. I placed the pregnant sanke along with a 5 year old male sushui in a kiddy pool since yesturday but no sight of egg yet, it is too much for koi to spawn this time of the year? should I continue to leave the koi in the kiddy pool or put them back in my main pond then wait for warmer weather?

Dear Koinewbie

There are a few things that spark koi into mating. Such as warter temp and amount of daylight.

Don't worry about your female if she dosent spawn she will reabsorb most of her eggs, you might as well put them back in the pond and get ready for some spawning in the spring/summer.

Re: [zoul] Can koi spawn in cold weather? [In reply to] Can't Post

My female koi belly got so big and she swim awkwardly, so I thought it time to try to breed again, temperature is around 60-70F during the day, I placed a male and the pregnant sanke in the kiddy pool, after 2 days there was no action, both of my kois are over 5 years old. the female koi start moving slowly then she floats upside down, I thought she was dead but when I picked her up she still moving, now I put the koi back into the main pond, 1 day into the main pond even though she still alive but most of the time she stay at the bottom upside down or on her side, not moving at all till I try to scoop her out (I thought she's dead). should I remove the eggs from her belly (not sure how)? I think she going to die soon :(

Please help!! I don't want to loose this lovely koi.

Dear Koinewbie

Your fish sounds like she's in bad shape. Are her eyes bulging and dose she have raised scales?

She seems to have a swimbladder problem or dropsey, or both.

Dropsey is usualy coursed by an infection of the kidneys. This courses the fish to retain water as the osmosis system is compromised. Ufortunatley in most cases by the time you notice it's often to late to treat.

If you have a quarintine pond that can be heated it might be worth putting her in there and gradualey increase the temp and add a broad range antibacterial treatment to it. But i think we can all hope.

Expect the worst and hope for the best. Check your water peramitors and keep up the maintanace if you have rocks and plants in your pond remove these as they are a breading ground for bacteria.

I think it could be a hopless case but just rember even the word hopeless still has hope init.

good luck

Dear Zoul,

Thanks for your reply and sharing your experiening. My koi seem to have raised scales on her bottom, but her eyes are not bulging. I will put her in a quarantine tank with warm water. My main pond doesn't have any rock or plant. Should I do anything with her big belly (eggs?)? Thanks again.

Dear Koinewbie

Personaly i wouldn't try to strip any koi of it's eggs unless i was paid to do so, or the koi was in such bad shape it would die any way.

I certainly wouldn't recomend anyone dose it without supervision from a trained vet or experianced person.

I will however explain the procedure to you keeping in mind that i think it is not the wises course of action in this case.

First you need to to get either clove oil or MS222 to anethertise the fish you do this buy getting two large bowls measure the amount of water in the bowls procisley and adding MS222 at 2 drops per litre in one of the bowls.

The other bowl need to be full of pond water and an airstone for recovery. A wet towel over the fishes head when sedated will also help.

So anyway mix in the MS222 thoroughly before attempting to catch the fish. Place the fish in the bowl with the MS222 you might want to employ a techneque known as spinning at this point where you gentley push the fish in a circle head and tail this will calm the fish.

After a few seconds the fish will lose equilibrum. Before attempting to strip the fish of eggs check that this course of action is needed by gently pushing a thumb from the sternum (just below the pectorial fins) to the anus. If any eggs are released then continue stripping the eggs by gentley squeezing with the hand in one direction towards the tail end of the fish.

Try to be gentle and as quick as possible. Once you have done place the fish in the airated bowl for recovery and then back to the quarentine facility so you can keep an eye on it.

Although i think a strong salt solution bath would be more benificial. In this case use salt for dish washers or natural sea salt. DO NOT USE TABLE SALT.
Use a bowl with about .5 to 0.6 % salt solution and bath the fish for about 10 minutes twice a day. Always keep an eye on the fish and take the fish out if it looses equilibrum.

Hope this helps good luck.
