Hello Andrew, Koi genetics and coloration are very complex. Not bieng a mad scientist on this myself I don't know exactly how this works. I am currently working with some stuff on breeding koi to gain more knowledge about the hobby. I have been working with Kohaku this year in a controlled breeding program. Of the spawning I kept approximately 500 eggs. Through recent culling processes I am down to roughly 175 fry. From this spawning I have the following colorations. Kohaku 20% Shiro Muji 10% all white Hajiro 5% all black Aka Hajiro 30% red white white tipped fins Beni Goi 5% all red Ki Goi 30% all yellow My take on the results of this expirement is this. All of these colors are part of the genetic distribution that lies behind but, are also part of Kohaku gentics. Even though we are breeding a full breed type of Kohaku in a close line breeding, all of the genetic traits are showing. Producing the various color types. While at the same time, remembering that what we see as a patterns final product is only a color mutation and not a breed type. The best way to improve the percentage of what someone is breeding, in most cases, is done by breeding like color mutations. The same thing can be found in Showa koi. They will produce Showa, Kohaku, Utsuri, Hajiro, and many more. However, you cannot assume that a Kohaku will hold true colors throughout life if it comes from Showa parents. The best results for Kohaku will come from breeding Kohaku x Kohaku.
