Confused... Can't Post

Hi everyone....
I am actually very very new in raring koi. Recently, i've converted a rather small tub (those blue one that is used in aquarium shops) and placed around 25 '3-4 inches koi' in it.... and another 3 koi from my old aquariums that are around 5-6 years old. After i placed them in, the three bigger ones seemed to be chasing each other (a kohaku and matsuba).....but about two days later, one kohaku seemed to be very quiet and always at the bottom of the 'pond'. I was wondering whether the chasing was some sort of mating because right after that, the kohaku refused to move but stayes at one corner whereas the matsuba was at the side of it....as if it was guarding the kohaku. When i try to touch the kohaku, it allows me to touch..? so is the kohaku preparing to lay eggs or perhaps sick? anyway....i dont haf any thing stringi in the pond except some little stones as the base....how does the eggs look like if it ever lay eggs? please help.....
any comments are wellcome....

Re: [plastic_ghost] Confused... [In reply to] Can't Post

hi there,

have u considered the possibility that the kois are scared. to look whether the kois are mating or ready for mating is the females body looks like swollen and full of eggs. to see whether the koi is sick perhaps u could inform us on the water condition and details on the koi.
i say the kois might be afraid because ive experienced once where my chagoi were happily roaming around the pond despite having ppl watching them at a near distance until they started to hide and stay at the bottom when there is ppl near.. only to find out that the maid goes there each morning to sweep away leaves laying on the ground and the kois braveness as well.. well once i knew i corrected the mistake and the kois seems braver. Wink

hope this help.. and always consider the possibilities of other things rather than quickly pointing to certain conclusions.

What I believe you have are terribly lethargic koi. U have too small a pond for too many koi with a filter system (??) that I presume is new and not cycled yet.

Ur fish are probably sick with ammonia and/or nitrite poisoning. Time to perform massive 50-60% water changes every other day till your filter kicks in. Also time to reduce the number of koi.... What measurement is your pond?

Get an ammonia and nitrite test kit from a fish shop and check the readings. I believe the readings should be high to cause such stress to your fish. Ur fish are not breeding.... they're just stressed out.

Koi have no protective reproductive behavior. They just lay thousands of translucent eggs and then proceed to eat the eggs up.
