Didnt do their job.... all the way Can't Post

So we had our first spawn ever... amazing!

All eggs were laid, took some out to hopefully hatch into fry....

But starting last night, i noticed them turning white, meaning they werent fertilized... None in the tank, or the pond were. What can cause the males not to fertilize? They did everything else, but not completed spawning....

They started yesterday, only one male and female did anything... Could it be that it isnt over yet???

Thanks, Dani

How old/large are the koi? If they are immature they may not have what it takes to get the job done yetBlush.

The ones that are truly spawning are about at an average of 20", males being larger, and i know they are older than 10 yeas....

Well that would be odd for 10yr+ koi not to finish what they startedCrazy. All I know to say is keep an eye on the eggs for a few more days and anything that does not hatch, clean it out. Otherwise they will decay and load your pond with ammonia and doc.

Wow, did i have a surprise!

So i was taking out the plant/pot that the fish had 'attempted' to spawn in, and all the eggs were all white and fuzzy cuz they hadnt been fertilized... But then i saw a few non white ones, kinda a tanish color... and i was all like omg, i think i see two lil dots... so with heart racing, i took one and looked at it under the microscope... what i saw, i was like, omg omg omg... It was a lil heart beating!!! (wow so this is what it feels like to be a mom seeing the babys heart beat) so i instantly called me parents and told them the news. I got a little 20 gallon setup with a heater and areoater (sp?) and put them in. (i only found about 40) i know there chance of survival is slim, but hey, its worth a try!!!!

Well I guess the old guy wasn't shooting all blanks after allCool. Good aeration, warm (not hot) water, and a few days should tell the rest of the story. Since this is your first time, a small number is probably better anyway. MUCH easier to practice with a small number than trying to figure out what to do with THOUSANDSShocked. Have fun, read up, and party onWink

I wouldn't mess with that temperature. They ordinarily hatch in spring weather to your water temp is just fine.

I also noticed about 3 weeks ago that our male toncho has orange on some of his scales on each side, starting on the right first. Does this have anything to do with spawning? (He also jumped three times this morning completely out of the water. Sure did freak mom out!!)

Sometimes they can get stressed from spawning which can cause some bloodshot areas, or they can even wound themselves on sharp rocks or get bruised from all the jostling around, but it would probably be a good idea to check your water parameters just in case it is something else. Jumping out of the water can be several things. Spawning excitement, top feeding for bugs, water problems, or parasites. Check the water first, if it checks out good take a look at the red areas to see if there may be wounds, ulcers, or critters under the scales.

It definatly isnt red, but orange... like bright orange. Nitrite is .25, ammonia is 1 right now, has been since spawned a week ago. Doing tons of water changes, and filter flushings... gone down a bit...

But i had an even bigger excitement this morning!!!!!!

THEY HATCHED!!! whoot whoot!!!!

so when we did clean the filters and were starting to drain the prefilter, i was like OMG DAD TURN IT OFF!! there was bout 20-30 hatchlings swimming around!!! so we saved the lil buggers and they are now in the other tank with the others... lol so excited!!! i love their lil eyeballs! they glow

Good news/bad news. The good news is obvious, you've got fryWink. The bad news is also obvious, you've got ammonia and nitrite. Those readings aren't deadly, but they can be very irritating to the skin and gills of your koi, especially if the water is warm and the ph creeps up a bit (above 9.0).
To help detoxify and lower the osmotic stress to your koi you can use this calculator to figure out how much salt to add to your water.
http://www.cnykoi.com/calculators/calcsalt.asp
I would raise it 1/3 at a time to a level of no more than 0.3%
In the mean while, what are you going to feed your fry???

Their was plenty of food in that prefilter, so i cought some of that water... But it wont last them long. I have another pond where there is tons of algae, and no ammonia nitrite so ill use that water as replacement. How long till i have to feed them? whats better, cooked egg yolk or baby brine shrimp?

Re: [fish&horsesrme] Didnt do their job.... all the way [In reply to] Can't Post

Good for you having plenty of good green water. They'll eat their egg sacks and green water while the brine shrimp are hatching, so you're good for a few days. I've never used the egg yolks myself, but several others seem to swear by it. I've just gone straight to brine shrimp myself.
What amazed me last year was how well the ones I DIDN'T seperate did on their own in the main pond. Hiding among the plants and eating whatever they could find I had several dozen grow at double the rate of the ones I was pampering with liqufry and brine shrimpTongue. I guess a little bit of algae and leftovers goes a long wayWink

Yesterday or the day beforeSly They take several days to hatch, so you need to go ahead and get 'em started.
