Disaster w/my babies! Can't Post

Hey to Zoul, Carla, & all others for your help!

It's been a couple days since I logged on. Due to the fact that as of a couple days ago, most of my fry have died!Frown

It has been VERY stressful on me. I don't think I've really eaten for the past two days. We believe the amonia got way out of control. I feed them on Thursday morning, and they seemed fine. then when I arrived home later in the afternoon. I noticed many of them where floating. Long story short, it's been a LONG two days. Swicthing from this to that to the other I think threw them in shock on top of everything else going on in there world.

You don't realize how delicate they are!

Now, I have literally 10 left out of the 1000 or so that we had as of two weeks ago. I hope they make it, we put them in a 10gallon fish tank in my room.

Any suggestions for these little guys?

I'm hoping our other female spawns. She seems a little on the heavy side. What an experience.

Ohhh Gracie...I'm so sorry! Not sure what your feeding them...I kept thousands in a 10 gal tank on my deck..out of the sun...did water changes ever day..replaced with my pond water from the big guys...I feed them 4 x a day..just a pinch...I also checked with the strips to make sure my water was right.. and picked up some underwater plants....I now have them in our family room where we watch them in a 90 gal tank..
Please tell me more ...I'm so sorry...
Carla

Dear Utsuri & Carla,

Thanks for the support. Yes, it's been a sad time.

As of today, there's 7 left out of ALL those babies! Unbelieveable!

The only time I saw something like this happen was about 8 years ago. My mom was cleaning our pond. Due to the big trees and the size of it. It's always been very hard to maintain. Anyway, she hadn't been to clean it for a while. She must have stirred up amonia. Because within that same day, all 9 of out koi that where about 20 inches long died! AMAZING!

As far as these fry, they had sun during part of the day. But most was shade. It's been very very hot here in Los Angeles. So, we know that the amonia got really really bad. We also think we didn't have enough water in there wadding pool. It's all been very baffling!

Going from over thousand fry to now 7 in 3days has been hard. 98% died within first 24hrs. I just wish they could talk so they can tell us how to help.

I was feeding them frozen hatched brine shrimp, & frozen daphnia. I would watch them eat. But boy, it's been a tuff road.

I hope our sanke spawns. I put back the plants that the babies where attached to.

The thing that upsets me is that the mom is a asagi and she's about 30inches long. She's beautiful. And one of the dads was a crow. There where so many little black ones. I was very excited. Not one survived!

The last few I have there's 1 or 2 that are white. A few yellow, and another yellow, with that black spots on it's back.

Now the question is, how do they start evolving and so forth. They are officially 2 weeks old today.

Do I just feed them 3 times a day? And do i continue with the daphnia. I have brine FINALLY starting to hatch? Can I feed them that?

Hi gracie,
I am glad the survivors are still going. As for how they will color up, it is hard to say because they are not purely bred. Just be patient with them and keep feeding them all the small things you can find. Including live brine shrimp.
Now for the hard part of tying to figure out what happened.
I have been following your post about these little guys. I am certain that you had too many in a small body of water. That might have been the source of ammonia build up. The other can be uneaten food. It is really hard to feed these tiny guys with out something not getting eaten. Ph could also have been a key thing. You would want to keep the Ph around 7.0. If the Ph was low in the pool, ammonia is non-toxic. But when you do a water change, the Ph raises and disaster strikes. The ammonia becomes toxic.

How to prevent this is easy. For next year, go ahead and start planning now. It would not hurt. Make a small pond of about 1000 gallons. This should get you started with about 300 fry. In late winter put dirt in the bottom of it. I used red clay. But if you can get your hands on Montmorillionite clay, that would be better. This will start to build up helpful bacteria as well as help to start a food source. Build this in the sun of course. Just before they spawn, put in about a half pound of chicken manure. This will really get the food source going strong. As soon as you put in the eggs, put in an airstone as well. This will create current and help keep fungus off the eggs.

Keeping that many fry alive is all in preparation and expirience.

HOpe this helps your future endeavours.
