Do all koi fry have barbels or "wiskers" Can't Post

Hi, I have a ton of fry I relocated to a 8 foot by 8 foot kiddie pool with hyacenths, and all have no barbels. In my main pond, my koi are 27 inches long, and have 4. I have 3 shubakin, and goldfish at 8 inches long. Thanks for any info in advance, pondgirl

Hi Pondgirl My first spawn I thought I had koi-goldfish cross. I netted a few and used a maginifying glass and could not see barels and then I just let them grow a while and guess what, I have some koi and some cross, so you may have a mix just give it some time and you will be able to tell. They are fun to watch grow so have fun.

Its really hard to see any whiskers at an early age. How old are they? Also,
was this an accidental spawning or planned. Watching koi fry grow is allot of fun
and u never know, sometimes u might end up with one or two nice ones, but be responsible to your existing koi and to the species. You must prepare yourself to do some major culling when they are big enough to see how they are developing.
Pic out a handful that look like they might have potential. Concentrate on raising them well and humanely dispose of the rest. To often people try to hang on to all of these offspring which always leads to disaster due to massive overpopulation. The other reason is that even with the best of parents usaully only 2 or 3 percent turn out to be a true classifiable koi. The rest are usaully of very poor quality and if kept or given away, will grow up to produce more inferior quality koi and so on.

So, enjoy the miracle of your spawn. Raising baby koi is a thrill and the anticipation of the development is exillirating, but be responsible and cull Slycull SlycullSly

Hope I havnt been to preachy. Just want u to be prepared so that u can enjoy the experience. If I can help in any way, let me know

Sincerely, Kiefer

SmileHi guys, thanks for all the info. No this wasn't a planned spawning. I just noticed some colored specs everywhere. I guess they are a few weeks old. One is actually 1+ inch long. Most are about an inch. Some are grey, some are translucent, and some are white, and orange. I think one is a koi, the rest are goldfish. I am going to give my sister and brother in law my goldfish, so that this doesn't happen again. I want only koi babies, if there are fry again. I have about only 10 fry, because most were eaten by the time I noticed them. I'm sure there are more, but I have yet to notice them. There is also a 4 inch goldfish that must have been a past brood, because I didn't buy it. It's a shubabkin babie I think. I put my fry in a 8 foot round kiddie pool that I use for my excess water hyacenth, and jurasic lettuce. I had an extra pond pump, so I made a little filter for the pond, and got some airstones to place around the pond as well. Will this be enough. There are like a million little pond water bugs and such for them to eat, is this ok too? Thanks I'm a newbee to the fish breeding world.

Oh, and no one was preechy. I love all the advice and knowlege. As I was takin off guard with the fry. Thanks for all your fast reply's, and I'll keep you posted. Thanks again, pondgirl.

I think that most, if not all, of your fry are koi fry. Goldfish stay gray until they are generally 6 months old. Koi fry can be born almost any color. Keep a close watch on your grey fry. They could be either future sanke or soragoi.

Thanks again everyone. I still don't quite know yet, as I was guessing they were only 3 weeks, but they could be a month old for all I know. They are just only an inch to an inch and a half. I will catch a few in my new kiddie pool set up in a month, and check for barbels, and colors to see what they are I guess. Thanks again, pondgirlSmile

just keep in mind that no goldfish are born with colors such as orange, white, yellow, red, white and black, or sanke patterns. Whiskers are very hard to see on inch-long fish.

However, the heads of koi are long and pointier than goldfish, and young koi also appear to have a "shimmer" to the skin on their faces, which goldfish fry don't.

Re: [Shiari] Do all koi fry have barbels or "wiskers" [In reply to] Can't Post

Well last night a few more babie fish in my main pond rose, and tried to eat momma and dadda's monstor pellets, sooo cute. Well I am positive one is a koi, because it still had an egg sac, and was bright orange, and black, and red! BEAUTIFUL! I know their colors change, but I hope not too much. It's strange, that I don't have any that color in my pond, but the breeding pair of koi are about 4 trying to mate with each other. One is a platnum ogon, longfin, one is a platnum yamabuki ogon koi, another is a platnum yellow koi, with shadings of black on his back, and a monstor sized kohaku koi. All I bought from a local breeder that was going out of buisness. I now know they are probably koi, as they were all trying to breed with each other yesterday, and the monstor is a female, and is really fat. I just wish I knew more, and was more prepared for the unexpected arrivals. I am trying to catch the rest of the fry in the main pond, but they are quick for babies just hatched! Thanks everyone, and I have learned soooo much in just the few days I've sighned on here. Thanks again, pondgirl
