Do goldfish prevent koi from spawning?	Can't Post

When I bought my koi 2.5 years ago I was told by the store clerk that if I put goldfish in with my koi the gold fish would produce a hormone that prevented the koi from spawning. I have been waiting for my koi to spawn, hopefully spring 2006. I recently introduced a 6 year old goldfish into the 100 gal pond with them. Now I'm afraid when spring comes I wont have any fry. I'm not sure if the goldfish is male or female, it hangs out with the female koi a lot. If anyone can point me to a url or give me info on this I'd really appreciate it. If needed I'd like to remove the goldfish before harm is done. Thank you.

I haven't had that problem. I started out with 9 koi and 1 goldfish and two of my female koi spawned within a month of each other. The goldfish even tried (in vain) to participate. Koi and goldfish can even crossbreed, producing some very goofy looking hybrid offspring Tongue

. That being the case you may want to remove the goldfish to a seperate tank during spawning to prevent ugly babies Shocked

Thanks! I dont know why the guy told me that. The place had several beautiful koi ponds and sold both koi and goldfish.

Hi carob,
I have 4 koi, five years old, one lionshead and three goldfish..all of them four years old.
My Koi are at least 18" long...this was the first year that I know of that they had spawn. We were forunate to catch them. The male koi chased the female koi all over the pond and the goldfish got in on it too. I had lots of koi fry's and also, cross breeds..very unusal looking. I know now who is female and who is male..LOL...having said that, if you only want koi fry's...then best to separate them from the goldfish. Smile

'cause the goldfish will surely participate as Larz1 said.. lol

Not a bad looking fish :) I'm glad to hear you had fry. I watched my two koi last spring do what I think is spawning. One chased the other about and the one I think is the female would shimmy out of the water up on some smooth rocks under the waterfall, shortly after the male would follow suit. However I never did see any eggs. Maybe they were a big young. Both have grown a lot this year and I expect a nice spawn with fry in the spring. I dont mind a few "goi" as long as I have something :) Here is a link to see my small but well loved pond and my two koi. I had a 3rd butterfly koi but a raccoon had it for dinner one night. We installed motion flood lights and I also found two of those annoying plastic fish that sing and put them next to the pond for a while. Anything that got close set off their singing and movement. It was working great until I awoke one night during a rainstorm and heard Billy Bass singing his heart out nonstop! Water had gotten into the circuit I guess. He must have been singing for hours! It was quite funny and thank God it didn't wake the neighbors.

Hi carob,
Thanks for sharing your pond photo's...really, really nice..a job well done! What I did was buy some fake draping kind of plants and put around the pond..the female laid eggs all over the fake grass. Koi will flat out eat up live plants......I know too, that they eat the eggs...so, they have to be taken out as soon as possible. That is funny about Billy Bass..rofl I can imagine..lol Good luck with next spring. I too am looking forward to next spring. I enjoy my pond very much..it is the most enjoyable hobby that I have ever had.

Hemmm...I was thinking about that too...

Like newly produced species are infertile...I think....but not sure.. Crazy

nah they are not infertile, it's not a true hybrid like a lion and a tiger. (liger or tigron) i think they call them.
Those long finned angel or butterfly koi (personaly i don't like them) i think are bred with sarassa comets.(a long finned goldfish) but i'm not sure. I hear you can get some that have been crossed with lion head goldfish and the other ones with long finns.
As these are all from the carp family they are still fertile.
Still if you cross koi with mirror carp you get what is known in england as a ghost carp. These are very popular, as they grow fast and become hand tamed maybe becouse they are so gready.

BTW: butterfly koi is just not my thing....they are very common in my area...but I don't like them in general... Crazy

Actually, although comets and butterfly koi may have similar fins, there's no crossbreeding in their history. Butterfly koi were created by breeding standard koi with indonesian carp, an unusually long-finned variety.

Yeah...I read that they originated in Asia...by mixing with so other carp......Guess that book was right afterall... Cool

Long fins are not my type of koi....I jst don't find them as attractive as standards... Smile

see even after 35 years of koi keeping i still learn stuff.
Do they have KHV in Indonesia ?? As i understand it the only safe place to get your koi is japan these days... And they don't do those butterfly koi (even though i don't like em)
