Eggs! Uh...now what??? Can't Post

My koi spawned yesterday and I've just scooped up as many eggs as I could (looks like almost a thousand!) and transferred them to a 600 gallon wading pool that I had been using as a holding pen for my koi while I fixed a leak in the pond. My koi have never spawned before this and I'm wondering if someone can give me some advice on what to expect.

I put a small bio-filter in the wading pool before putting my koi in last week but I'm sure it hadn't had time to build up bacteria because the ammonia spiked and I had to neutralize it with Ammo-Lock, do water changes and add salt to keep my fish alive. Now I'm worried about having a similar problem with the fry. I've heard that you should only feed the fry with live food to maintain the water quality. But what type of live food is best? And at what point do I do my first culling? Will the newly hatching fish eat the remaining eggs? Can I rely on the Ammo-Lock and my week-old bio-filter to maintain the water quality when I begin to feed the fry with dry food? Will the salt and Ammo-Lock that I put in the pond create a problem for the eggs or the fry?

Those are just the questions that I can think of...I'm sure there are lots of others I SHOULD be asking but don't even know enough to ask.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Bob

Hi Montalvo,
Since I am just a kindergarten at koi raising, I can't help you on the water quality..they tell me to have the water set up "before" the eggs come..since I had not done that, I took pond water and put into 20 gallon containers and put the artificial greenery that the eggs were on into the containers with air stones..they hatched and I have way over 100 fry..I feed them the powdered baby food, called: "First Bites." I feed them six times a day and so far they are doing well..I plan on transferring them into a 200 gallon kiddie pool in a couple of weeks..I took the extra filter that I had running in my big pond and put it in the kiddie pool so that it could set up bacteria..I will remove that and put in air stones when I transfer the babies, because the big filter will suck them in. I have been doing a 10% water exchange in the containers every other day. This might not be of much help to you, but wanted to share with you what I have learned. Good luck with your fry's..alot of people on the board recommend growing your own live brine shrimp for your fry's..that is very good for them..but, I just can't set that up..my space is limited..this is my third year raising frys and each year I have used the "First Bites" until they get big enough I buy the frozen brine shrimp..they love it.
Again Good luck..this is an excellent forum and I have learned so much from everyone.

Thanks for the information, Mookey. I'll take your advice and track down some "First Bites". The bio-filter that I have in the wading pool has a mechanical filter that should keep it from sucking the fry into the pump so I should be OK on that score. But I'm uncertain whether the bio-filter will be populated with enough bacteria to make a difference by the time these guys hatch and start to eat. And I saw today that I still have LOTS of eggs in the pond and when those hatch, they may well either a) get eaten by my koi or b) get sucked through my gravity bottom drains into the settling tank and then the only thing that separates them from the impeller of my pump is a curtain of bottle-brush.

Well, somehow these guys have been able to procreate in the wild without my help so maybe I just need to let nature take its course.

Hi again,
I have been exchanging water from the kiddie pool with pond water trying to get it ready faster..now, if this works out, I'll be fine..I've got to get my over hundreds of frys into a bigger place soon..Might want to post on the 'water quality' section to get more info..I had one huge Koi spawn for 7 hours..the whole pond walls and floor were white with eggs..took 8 days of cleaning to get it back to par. Smile I had four females in all to spawn in two days time this year..I lost a lot of fry..couldn't save them all..I would need a six acre farm. LOL Tongue I often wondered myself just how these guy's make it in wild too..LOL I love the hobby and enjoy raising frys.
