Filter for Baby Koi Can't Post

I just came across this forum and thought I would get some advice on breeding koi. I have three koi large enough in my pond to breed and I bred them just as a hobby. Last year there was a multitude of eggs and many baby fry but most died. I ended up with about 30-35 koi near the fall. I never culled because mine began dying off so rapidly.

My first question is can you filter the water with the baby koi in there and how do you do it without sucking them up and killing them?

Second question is what can you use to make spawning ropes or where can you buy them?

Third question is what do you feed the baby koi?

I also have two air vents that go in a fish aquarium? Do these need to run after the baby koi hatch and will a powerful air current kill the koi?

Any advice anyone could give me I would grealty appreciate because I am starting to make plans to breed my koi again.

Thanks,

Joel

If you use a filter box in your pond make sure you put a stocking around th pump to keep the fry from being sucked up in the pump.
You can make spawning ropes easy. Just get you some nylon rope about as big as your thumb and cut in 4 foot lengths and then cut you some 6inch lengh as thread about 4 inches apart and ravel out the ends. I just got through making mine, I made 4 spawning ropes and it took about 30 mins from start to finish.

Maybe you should consider using a spawning pool of about 300 gallons and spawn the pair in that and make sure that you set up a couple more pool of water so when you need to change the water out you will have water of the same temp to put in pool with the fry.

Also you will need at least one large pool set up for algie to grow so the little fry will have something to eat.

Also after the fry hatch start hatching off brine shrimp for them to eat and watch the water close for ammonia build up as this will kill the fry. You will need to do frequient water changes in order to raise a batch of fry.

Re: [koifishgirl] Filter for Baby Koi [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for your advice. I'm starting this week to clean up my pools and get them ready for the fish. I was reading up last night on raising brine shrimp. I wonder if you raised them in advance could you also freeze them and feed them later? In some of the books I have they say to go with bought frozen food like that instead of some live food because the of the risk of disease. I'll have to get out and get some nylon ropes. I appreciate your help.

One last question, do the long airstones that you buy for fish aquarium hurt the baby fry?

Thanks again,
Joel

No the air stones will not hurt the fry, and you can use these without a filter in the pool you just need to do water changes every day to keep ammonia down and make sure that the water that you use is the same temp as the water in the pool with the fry.
