Fish compatible with Koi Can't Post

Does anyone have any experience with or know of types of fish that are compatible with koi; specifically scavenger/ bottom feeder type fish of some sort, maybe like a tench or catfish that won’t attack my koi but would be content with eating the stuff on the bottom and elsewhere and keeping the pond clean.
Any ideas or information would be appreciated.

Thanks
Al

Re: [Phanso] Fish compatible with Koi [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,
Each summer (as long as I had them) I sent my tropical fish to summer camp with my Koi. The first few days at CAMO KOI they were shy but evetually the tropical fish got into the swing of things and everyone hung out together in the pond (15x12) all summer long. They were kind of cute together. the big Koi and the strange tropical fish of all kinds. sharks, tiger barbs, severms, catfish.

Unfortunately convincing the tropical fish to get on the bus and head back into the house while the koi hybernate for the winter wasn't easy. and I can honestly say I got tired of my husband yelling at my because I dropped the shark (tropical) we had finally caught after spending 1/2 hour chasing it all over the pond. it was stressfull. for me anyway. the one very stupid mistake I made was that the bottom feeder was dark- so I never found him in the fall and he died when the water got to cold.

Thanks for that info redibe,

I made the same mistake. I put in two dark channel catfish and two dark plecos. The catfish may survive the winte but the plecos definitely won't and there is now way for me to find or catch them. As a matter of fact I haven't seen them since I put them in the pond. I also have an albino catfish that I think I'll remove and sell as soon as I get a chance. He is a viracious eater and I don't want him messing with my koi although he is smaller then them.
But thanks again for you response and good luck with your pond.

The thing I found most interesting was watching them school. they all hung out together, regardless of size. the tiger barbs were quite small and my largest KOI was very imposing looking. but there they were, side by side, waiting to be fed, looking for food, messing with my plants, whatever their pleasure. everyone who stood and viewed the pond was awed by the scene.

I sort of felt bad when I gave away the tropical fish and they couldn't go to summer camp anymore. (I switched to salt water - big financial mistake - costs me way too much money.)

I am considering buying a few cheap tropicals this year just to throw in my pond for fun and give them back to the store if I can catch them in the fall. if I can't catch them, well, they had a brief taste of freedom before they freeze to death and isn't that worth something?
