Fourth culling update Can't Post

Got up early this morning and ripped through my fourth culling. Upon closer inspection I found a few of the nicer kohaku to have almost undetectable gill plate curl out that I missed when they were younger. Bummer! Also upon closer inspection found a few with slightly deformed mouths. This is not noticable unless u turn them upside down and really give them a hard look. It would become very apparent if they were allowed to grow on. Another Bummer! They are getting down to a precious handful. I kept 30 or so that I was unsure of and put them in the big green pond to see how they develop. Will try to get a pic of what is left later K iefer

Hi Keifer,
What does it mean when you say "almost undecteable gill plate curl out"? I never heard of the expression before and it would be great to be enlightened.

No sweat man. Gill plate curl is a deformaty that is found in every spawn. I will take a few good pics of the condition for u tommorow. Basically, the very ends of the gill plates curl outward instead of hugging neatly to the side of the body. This can be detected at a fairly early age and fry with this condition should be dispatched immediately. I only have these because I was studying the color development of a few of them.

Seems like the ones with the best pattern are more prone to have the flared gill opercula - I hate that. Some say the deformities are related to water quality or extreme temperature. I think its genetics because there are some spawns with a high incidence of gill deformities but no fin deformities, and other spawns with high incidence of fin deformity but no gill deformity. In my case, the flared gills seem to show up more in gosanke, while the pectoral fin deformities show up more in spawns from doitsu.

I agree. The best ones are the ones with the most genetic defaults so u will always have a certain percentage of deformaties regardless of your conditions.
