Fry? Can't Post

Hi, I was searching for some advice. We've had Koi for many years now. Well, about a week ago we pulled our 5 out and threw them in a kids pool. We have major repair work to do on the pond. Anyway, they ended up spawning Thursday night and I didn't realize there where eggs till Friday afternoon. We put them in another bucket and have added a air thingie in. What happens now? I hear about the hard boiled eggs, 3x a day. Looked at brine shrimp, but that seems so complicated! How many days before we start seeing anything, feeding, so forth! Please help!

Dear Gracie

Depending on the temp it can take 6 to 12 days for your eggs to hatch.

If you get your pond done in time use the kiddys paddling pool, as it has more room.

If it's in full sun even better. As after your fry have hatched they will feed on their yolk sacks for a couple of days. The first food is inflosora You can culter this very easy or you could just throw some soil in the water. Make sure it dosent contain any chemicals.

If you can find some live daphnia. Daphnia are fresh water crustation, that are 50% protein and 50% fiber.

Thing like egg yolks and brine shrimp mess up the water big time and you will be doing loads of water changes to keep the peramitors any where near decent.

Don't try to feed them flake food or the other priority foods, no matter how crumbled into dust. This will just lead to constipation hernias prolapsing and death.

Next year you will be better prepared. This being your first spawning treat it more as a learning proses.

okay, so leave them in direct sunlight? I had some shade put there for them today because I was scared we'd fry the. HAHAHAHA.......no punt intended! They've spawned before, but this is the first time we thought of pulling out the plants. We're very excited that we even have eggs. So cool! This is going very interesting. We have a 15000 pond on the front, and since we've lost MANY MANY Koi, we thought it'd be nice to replenish our stock. I so happened to buy 3 new ones the night they ended up doing the deed. Our's happen to be about 5/6years old. Our Female is the biggest one and about 30inches. She's beautiful and we've named her Blue. Beacause she has like blue that runs along her back with orange on bottom and white. I think the other 4 are males. Know our pure black one Jet is a male.

Yes direct sunlight should be ok you still have the plants they came on, in the pool ? Should be ok.

Try Hard to get some daphnia.

Personaly i set up my 2000 litre paddling pool at the start of febuary. At least 2 months before any spawnings. After hatching they take about a month to get to 1 to 1.5 inches. Most of the daphnia have gone by then (been eaten).

I have a shallow end to my pond that can be netted off it's 18 foot by 18 and 3 foot deep.

The ones i keep are kept in their until they are about 5 inches long. Then i take them to my buddy who has an aquarium shop and he sells them for me.

Thank you so much for you knowledge! I really appreciate it, I've done more research in the last 24hrs, then in the 15yrs we've had Koi. I will keep you all updated!
