Getting one of my females to lay Can't Post

Quote
Koi spawning is dependent on several things:

1) Time of year.

2) Female being ready and full of eggs.

3) Temperature.

4) Breeding Medium.

5) Conditions of the water.

6) Males that are interested.

7) Koi that are old enough (minimum 2 years), large enough and mature enough to do it.

HI guys!

I got this from a post where Branmuffin replied.

I've been wandering what the problem with my setup is causing my Koi not to breed,

I meet most of the criteria above ( excuse the measuring units as I'm in South Africa) :

1) Nearly mid summer
2) Female def full of eggs
3) water is prob around 22'c
4) plenty breeding medium, plants etc
5) just had water tested by specialist, in good cond
6) ???? I've got plenty males of similar size
7) looking at around 40cm

I've bred plenty of gold fish but the koi just won't lay her eggs, they are in a pond of about 10,000 litres at the moment, could a problem be overcrowded? got around 30 koi, plenty gold fish.

I have another pond which is empty at the moment, holds around 4000 litres, should I get this up and running and pair off the female and a male?

thanks

darren

I hear they spawn when you move them to a differant pond, maybe take them out a while, put them back in?

Hi,

My main pond is was overcrowded when one of the females started to breed (about 2 weeks ago) so I moved her to a breeding pond, where she finished about 4 hours later. The other females in the pond have not spawned but are full of eggs.

So overcrowding cannot be blammed.

Some medications and dyes will keep koi from breeding. An example would be Malachite Green. I read somewhere that some people use Malachite Green to purposely keep fish from breeding, I've never tried it so I can't verify. Also if you have strong water movement which I have used to keep my Show Koi from breeding.

Time of year. Most koi will only breed during a certain time of the year. Here in California the normal breeding season is from around March through May. After that passes and the koi haven't bred yet, they'll normally wait until the next year. The female eggs will then be re-absorbed in the body.

Quiet Area: Koi needs a quiet area to breed in, if it's too noisy and they feel threatend by predators or whatever ... they may not breed.

This is actually your best bet. Most professional breeders will prepare a separage breeding tank for this purpose. Thoroughly disinfect the pond and fill it with dichlorinated water. Get some filtration and aeration going and let it sit for a couple of weeks. If possible get the water temperature up to about 5 deg higher than your existing pond. Put in some breeding medium, ie: plants with long leaves or long stringy roots, but make sure they're not harmful to fish. Or you could use a bunch of clean mop heads. Anchor some down at the bottom and let some of them float.

Get a female that's full of eggs and two to three males. Males should be at least 2 years old and females 3 years old and all over 12". Place them in the breeding tank and cross your fingers. If they're ready to breed, this should occur within the week. You can sometimes tell when a male koi is ready to breed by the roughness of their gill plates as well as a few white spots on the gills plates and pectoral fins.

OR- You can artificially breed them. You'll have to get with Efren Gabriele on how this is actually done. You'll have to squeeze the female eggs out and same with the male sperm. I've never tried it because I don't want to end up with fish ...Deader than a Doornail!

How can something be "Deader than a Doornail?" How would one determine how dead a Door Nail is?Sly

darren,

when you move the koi to a new environment (FG tank) somehow it triggers the spawning instinct. Of course the female must be ready. You should also prepare some bunches of spawning ropes. I use rafia strings, lots of them, seperate each string into 4 fine threads, open each thread up to look like weeds and tie them densely into 2ft bunches, green color is best. Goodluck!

A bit more on my experiences with breeding kois - so far I've tried it 5 times, on 4 counts the spawning came within 24 hours after moving kois from pond to FG tank. The 1st time it took 3 days because there were no spawning ropes, so I think the ropes are important. The FG tank is 6x4x3ft, another important thing to succeed is good water condition, I also use a bit of Interpet anti-fungi solution to keep the eggs away from infection. Good luck!
