Ghost Koi with Sarasa Comets Can't Post

Hi there, new here :o)

I've a fairly new pond set up with 4 ghost's (3-5") and 3 Sarasa Comets (8"). The other day I found the comets were spawning and have now stopped.

What I was wondering was, is it ok to just leave the fish as they are in the pond, I believe comets lay around 1000 eggs, or would I be best to bring in the female comet into my large aquarium until eggs are laid? This is the first time I've had cold water fish to spawn. Still pretty new to this and I don't want my koi and comets to eat up all the eggs/fry.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

I forgot to mention that there are also four 4" orfes, a 4" mirror carp and a large goldfish also in the pond. Thanks

According to KoiVet and other web resources I've checked the adults aren't cannibalistic. Only the young are. (they'll eat just about anything including each other)Pirate. If they've already stopped spawning check for eggs in the roots of any plants you have to see if they are there. If so they will look like tiny little pearls, white if sterile, greyish translucent if fertile.

Re: [larz1] Ghost Koi with Sarasa Comets [In reply to] Can't Post

Well there's been no signs of any eggs in or around any of the plants in my pond. I'm thinking they've not been laid yet as the female is rather large around the lower back of her abdomen. Guessing she's not ready yet.

Would it be advisable to leave her where she is or bring her into one of my indoor aquariums (currently only a small goldfish in at the moment) to keep an eye on her and any sign of eggs? I'm guessing might be best to let all the fish get on in their natural ways and leave her in the pond?

Thanks again.

I am less familiar with Goldfish than with Koi, but if you seperate the female to the indoor aquarium you will need to put a male with her as he will stimulate her to spawn and then fertilize her eggs.Blush
Without the male to stimulate and then fertilize you won't get anything but a bloated femaleUnsure.

Ok, thanks for that info. I'll just leave them be in the pond and see if anything develops :)

Re: [Lawrencesystems] Ghost Koi with Sarasa Comets [In reply to] Can't Post

Just thought I'd let you know that if you leave the eggs in the pond when they are laid the koi will definatly eat them all up. Even female koi have been seen bumming around, eating their own eggs immediatly after spawning. If you want any eggs to reach maturity you must remove them to a seperate aquarium or pond. Most breeder's suggest a $6.99 kiddie pool from your local Toy's R Us for raising your fry. The best way is to put your female in the kiddie pool for a day or two till she aclimates and then introduce the male you want to breed with her. Make sure to provide places for the fish to deposit their eggs. Use of fake or real plants is a common solution to this problem. Remeber to remove the parents about 1-3 hours after the spawning has ended. Any longer and they may eat all the eggs, I'm not kidding either. Anyhow, hope this helps!
Good luck,
Gekoeyes

they're chasing eachother again today.. been really warm. It's def the same two comets chasing the female.

Isn't it too late for spawning now though? Early August..

How big is the female? It may be hard for the gold fish to bump out the eggs if they are not big enough to do the job, I can tell you this though they will try and try hardWink

You do know fry resulting from this spawn will not have color and will not reproduce when they get older right? Unless you just want to raise these fry I would try and put a male koi with her, and remove the goldfish untill the spawn is complete.

Point of clarification needed. Are all of the fish involved in the spawing the same species???
If Koi interbreed with goldfish the offspring will be butt uglyPirate, infertileTongue, hybrids that might be used for bait on your next fishing tripShocked, but not much good for anything elseFrown. If the males and females doing the dirty dancingBlush are all comets on the other hand, all should be fineSmile.

Re: [larz1] Ghost Koi with Sarasa Comets [In reply to] Can't Post

Larz1 I read your reply about the hybrids. I have fry in my pond that I have no idea who spawned with whom. (just 9 survived) Many started out butt ugly like you mentioned but now some are changing colors. If they start getting color is there a chance they are not hybrids and could be Koi? I can not catch them to put in a glass and use magnification but I can't see barbels. Some are 2 inches long now. I had fantails, 3 koi and one sarasa comet in my pond. So big question is can they be colored and still be hybrid or will hybrids only stay brown? I don't mind if they are infertile as I don't want to get overcrowded anyway. Just wish I could figure out their origin,

Chris

Re: [backyardfun] Ghost Koi with Sarasa Comets [In reply to] Can't Post

You'll probably have to wait and see. If they are koi they will develop barbels (wiskers) and begin showing signs of color variation. Occasionally a hybrid will color up a bit, but their heads are generally deformed, wiskerless, and have somewhat abnormal fins. At 2" long they are just barely beginning to develop enough to see anything. Give them a month and you should be able to tell.
