Got a question or two... Can't Post

Hello, my pond is about 20' x 9' kinda ovalish. about 3' deep about 2/3 of the pond and 1' the other 1/3 on the waterfall side. I did everything myself. There are about 20 goldfishes now. I have noticed many babies inside the pond now, they grow pretty fast. I am probably going to get some kois soon, but I'm worried about the mix breed of them that I have read everyone talk about. What should I do? Should I worry bout the mix breed? Is it that bad?

Another thing is, I caught some little fishes from a lake nearby. I'm assuming they are baby bass or baby trout. I can see the difference between the baby goldfish and them. I'm wondering if I should leave them in there or not? They were nearly microscopic when I had them, now they are about 1". They grow fast as well. What do you guys think?

That's all dependent on what you want your pond to have. I have seen ponds (even in Japan) where they have fish other than koi. I have often thought about having a couple of Rainbow Trout in my pond just to have something different.

One thing to note is that I have read in other forums that goldfish will breed with koi, and that the resulting frys will be goldfish. This I haven't verified personally, so I can only go by what I've read.

If the time comes when you become Koi Kichi, you may at some point in time cull all of the other fish out.

Again, the choice is strictly up to you.

Hey branmuffin. Hmm well I have had 8 Koi's but they got eaten up one night by racoons. I haven enhanced security a bit. I was planning on getting kois anyway, a pond is not a pond without them ;)

Well with the question on the trout/bass... I am not sure which one they are. But wouldn't they eat the goldfish/koi if they get bigger?

I would think that in order to have a bass capable to eat a fish over 2" in length it would have to be of a very large size, and by that time it might already be dinner Wink

The only thing I would be concerned with is, IIRC bass are very territorial and might prove to be agressive against the other fish.

An interesting question about the Bass. I don't think the Trout would pose any problems, but the Bass might. I'm don't know how they would co-exist in the same pond.

Perhaps if they grew up in the same environment and are well fed, there will be no problems. It's seems to me that all the fish in the pond would grow about the same time, and therefore all the other fish would be too big to swallow. They only concern is if you were too put very small koi in there later, the Bass could then go after it. I can't really answer that for you, and I don't know of anyone who keeps Bass in with their other fish. But an interesting concept.

Let us know how it turns out if you decide to do it.

heyas, well that's the thing, i'm not sure if it's a trout or bass... any signs? 2 of them look like they could be bass, they are bigger than the rest... the rest are about an inch, looks like they have stripes... around 20 of them and they swim in groups most of the time.

Like I said, an interesting concept. Sounds like they are Bass. Let's put it this way. Of what I know about Bass (and that's very little), they will eat anything that are small enough to put in their mouths. So if the other fish are too big to fit, they probably won't touch it.

Additionally, if they grew up in the same pond as the other fish, perhaps it will think that it's one of them (part of the family) and therefore will leave it alone.

So if all of your other fish dissapears one day and only the Bass remains, then you'll know that it was a bad idea. (LOL)Unsure Hopefully, it wasn't an expensive idea. Frown I don't think that a Racoon would be selective enough to eat all of the other fish and leave the Bass alone.Sly (Selective Dining!)Tongue
