Help!! Can't Post

Hi,

I'm from Singapore and am an inexperienced koi owner. Recently, one of my nine kois began to have a swell on her abdomen, and we placed her into another separate tank, fearing that it might be some disease. However, this morning when I went to take a look at her, I found eggs in the tank! We separated the eggs into a pail (I don't have enough tanks) and really do not know what to do with it. I don't think they are fertilised, as the eggs were just spawn and the female was isolated. I'm really desperate now... Please help me!! Thanks...

Hi dsng,

You may have ended up doing the right thing!

Spawning in the pond can be a messy thing. There are mutitude of problems associated with spawning and one of the main issue is water quality. With spawning, vast quantities of ammonia is produced which is toxic to koi. By isloating your female koi, the pond water remains pristine!

The eggs are not fertilised and should be discarded. You can also put the female back to the main pond and hope it does not release any more eggs.

Alternatively, you can leave the female koi in your temporary tank (if it is big enoug) for a few more days. What you will need to do is to do massive water change (>50%) and get rid of the all the eggs. Salt to 0.3% and monitor for a few days. When you are satisfied, put the koi back to the pond.

Cheers..

Thanks, that was really helpful... But how would I know when she has finished releasing all her eggs? There is still lots of froth in the water - that means it's still releasing eggs right?

Hi dsng,

The froth is a sign of ammonia. It probably stinks too. As mentioned, leave it in the temporary tank as long as it is good enough and carry on with water change/remove eggs to reduce the toxic effect of ammonia. Just monitor after a few days.

Cheers..

Thanks a lot!

Just out of curiousity... If the female fish has a certain spawning period, what about the male fishes? Will they also release their milt, like, during this period as well?

Yes, if the males are sexually matured.

Cheers..
