Help! Eggs on spawning rope and pond cover!!! Can't Post

Hi,
I have 3 koi fish that I was setting aside because they are on ebay. They were in a 6ft pearls of paradise show tank with a black netting/cover. I placed the spawning ropes I had purchased on top of the net, using it as a shelter for the fish to shade themselves, not thinking that they would spawn.
Went out there today to check on the fish, they are fine but there are eggs everywhere...on the black cover and on the partially submerged spawning brushes. The eggs are white and I noticed them because when I lifted the brushes from the net, there was resistence.
Anyway, I have separated the two male fish and the female fish and left the eggs in the pearls of paradise show tank.
What do I do now? How will I know if they are fertile or not? It would be so cool to get fry for the first time, but I am worried because although we have 70 deg days, the nights are in the 50's

Hi Blue put a little faith in mother nature. The temps are ok. If the eggs are all white this means that they are not good, dead eggs. I just got my first spawn and the eggs are clear. Take a close look at the eggs and you should see some clear ones. If not I dont think they will hatch. Keep a eye on them anyway and see if they hatch about 6 or 7 day and they should be hatched out. I would suggest you get you some brine shrimp eggs fast and start hatching some off as the koi hatch off and get you some more tanks set up with frest water and check everyday for ammonia in fry tank. Make sure that the water in the holding tank is the same as the fry tank and transfer water as needed. Also set up you a pool and let algie grow in it to feed the fry. Add you a little ferterlize to the food pond and set in full sun and do this today also go get you a five gallon bucket of water from a stream of another pond to help get the live food you need in the pond. Dont let the bloom die on you this is a good food for all the fry when they hatch out. If you have plent of sunshine you should be able to keep a bloom. After about two weeks take some of you pelet food and put in a blender and blend untill you have a fine powder then you can start feeding this to the young, I would also keep some brine shrimp for the young as Keifer has had good luck feeding this to his fry. Good luck Blue.

The temps in your aera are the same as they are here and two breeders that I have been in contact with are getting their spawns now. They have been doing this for years and they gave their koi shots to get them going. Mine just spawned own the own 4-19-05 with the same temps that you have.

Thanks Judy, I guess it is a waiting game. I didn't see any clear eggs on the spawning ropes, maybe they are all infertile. Will have to wait for a week and then see if any hatch. Thanks for the info. Funny thing is that I just acquired the fish on 4/16/05 and they were separated for in the show tank as a q-tank, I guess they thought I was trying to breed them.

Blue I was told that females will spawn each other by some breeders, of course the eggs wont be fertale. Makes me wonder why people seperate the males from the females if they are going to turn funny on usSly Are you sure their was a male in with the females? This is something I am going to did a little deeper into and see if I can find out why this happens. This is only what another breeder told me so dont take it to heart as I have not done any research on this topic. Last year at the Atlanta Koi Show several of the koi were also spawning in the show tanks I guess they had the right conditions. The koi had to be seperated to get the show back on track, it was so funny.

I did find at least one clear/opaque egg on the show tank cover this morning. It was bigger than the white ones, would be funny if only one fry hatch out of the bunch since only one was fertilized. There was one male ogata platinum ogon in with one ogata platinum female ogon and a 17 inch momotaro sanke in there. If it makes it, I will name it Nemo.

If you found one good one their is more you are just not seeing them. I looked at my eggs after I posted and saw a few white eggs on my lilies and the clear eggs look as if they are turning a little dark. They sure do develope quickSly I noticed more eggs today than I did yesterday and this is because the clear eggs are harder to see. I also noted that their was a bunch of the eggs the are alot smaller than others. I dont know why but if you look a little closer I think you will find that you have more live eggs than you think, they may already be turning and you just dont see them. Have you got a micrscope that you can put some of the eggs under and take a look at them? I hope you have a good hatch. Make sure that you get at least 3 ponds ready for the fry becauese you may need them, and make sure that you get the algie pool going ok. If they dont hatch you still wont have lost anything but a little time.

Thanks Judy, I also looked at the spawning ropes today. I moved them indoors to see if I can monitor them closer while the show tank cover is still outside. On the spawning ropes, there are a few eggs I did not see yesterday that have grown 3 times the size. Maybe these are also fertile eggs.

Re: [koifishgirl] Help! Eggs on spawning rope and pond cover!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

To my surprise this morning, some eggs fell to the bottom of the tank. I turned off the lights and used a flash light to shine on the bottom and there are transparent wiggly little things moving around. Seems like some hatched after all and the eggs sacs are still attached. So I think I have a day until the eggs sacs are depleted right?

So now what??? Do I run to the pet store and buy brime shimp? Dont know where I can get liquifry in time. Please help, I would like to raise at least a handful for fun.

Blue you can buy brine shrimp eggs at most pet shops , go get some and hatch of tonight they should be ready for their first feed tomorrow. They have direction on pack and you should be able to get a small hatcher to hatch them off. I would go now and get what you need dont wait or you will lose all the fry from starvation. It takes two day for the egg sack to be used up so time it with hatching the shrimp

Re: [koifishgirl] Help! Eggs on spawning rope and pond cover!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

okay, an update. With a flashlight at night shining on the sides of my 55 gallion indoor tank where the spawning mats reside, I have more hatchlings than originally thought. They are mostly stuck vertical on the sides of the tank, with two or three visiibly free swimming and even taking a gulp of air at the surface and swimming down again.
They look like transparent wiggly worms, just kidding!
I have bought some baby fry fish food (liquid form) and am culturing brime shrimp eggs since last night. I have started using the liquid food to feed them since yesterday. Hope I am doing this right, anyone can chime in please in came I am messing up...

Just watch the ammonia build up Ok, Make sure you keep you some clean water to keep in their tank and make sure it is the same temp. If you keep the water good and clean and plenty of O2 you should be ok. I wish I could see mine as they are in green water and can only see the eggs that are still not hatched out. As of yesterday I did not see anymore stuck to the lilies.

Judy,
if they are not stuck to the lillies, they may have fallen to the bottom to hatch! I will be watching the water parameters

better news. I ran outside to check on the original tank they spawned in. There are also hatchlings there and some eggs have eyes but still need to hatch. The pond cover have some fungus but I dont want to treat now since there are live fry in there and the medicine might kill them.

I have at least a hundred in the 55 gallon indoor tank. The tank bottom are filled with little transparent fish. Here are the parents...

Re: [aragorn] Help! Eggs on spawning rope and pond cover!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Blue some good looking parents if I am not mistaken you should get some nice fry from the spawn. I think it is going to take a while to start the culling but since you only have a small amount of fry you should be able to hold on to them long enough to tell what they are. I am going to try and find out for you what this spawn will come up with. Just hold on for a while till I can get hold of a fellow that does cross spawning all the time and he can tell me for sure what the majority will be. I think you will get alot of kujaku from this spawn but I am not sure. I do know that if you cross a Kohaku with a gin matsuba you will get Kujaku from that spawn and since one of the koi was a sanka you still might come up with this as the Kohaku and Sanka come from each other. I will get back to u as soon as I can, or maybe someone else knows what you will have from this spawn.

Fry update [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello,
All of the fry hatched in the net cover died because of crazy temps here. Days would hit 70 while nights were in the 50s.
However, most of the fry in the 55 gallon aquarium are doing well. Tomorrow will be their 2nd week since hatching. They are 1/4 of an inch long. Surprisingly, as an experiment, some fry in the 10 gallon tank are the same length, but their girth are much wider, perhaps it is the lower stocking rate, or more food distribution given in proportion.
