Check ph, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia.
You may be experiencing new pond syndrome.
Make sure there is plenty of air.

What are the symptoms?

There is something serious wrong to loose ten fish that quick. When did you set your pond up and what kind of bio filtration do u have set up. Do not purchase anymore fish until u have resolved your water problem! What kind of test kit do u have? How large are the fish that died? Where did u purchase them? What is the size and depth of your pond? One thing is for sure, the flake food did not kill them.Unsure

I am definitly not the pro on this forum. I am a begginer compared to most of the seasoned veterans on this site but I will try to help.

I have bad news for uFrown A pond really needs to be up and running for at least a month before u start adding fish. This gives the pond a chance to cycle and become biologically stable. Without a mature bio filtration system and oxygen your little guys do not have a chance of surviving, unless you have a really good air pump running and are doing daily water changes. What kind of water have u been adding to the pond? How are u removing the chlorine from the water that u are putting into the pond? Do u understand how a biological filter sytem works and what it is for? I think maybe someone got ahead of themselves. No big deal!
Many people jump the gun because they are in a hurry to get fish. The results are usually the same. I did it myselfSly

Time for u to start researching. Be patient and set the next one up right. This forum alone is full of back info that u can read and learn. Also, there are thousands of pond sites that have detailed instruction on how to set up a pond and will teach u about bio filtration and why u must have it.

Get a basisc working knolledge of how it is done and it will make it much easier for us to help you. NO more fish until your ready!!! Promise.........

Good luck, Kiefer

U got a lot of learnin to do yet, but that is half the fun. A bio filter to put it simply helps to convert the water that the fish have fouled up by pooping in it
into good water that wont poison the fish.

Re: [koifishgirl] Help big problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Judy

Sorry to hear your losing so many of your new fish. The fact that they are all gasping for air at the top and that the ones you lost are the biggest makes me think you need more oxygen. What is the water temp, as you may know the higher the temp, the less oxygen present in the water. I would cool the water temp a lot. The cooler water will also slow the fish down, a good thing when they are stressed. Adding another cheap pump would help right now. The temp will hang around 100 for the rest of the summer here so if your pond is in full sun like mine you will need to do something to cool the water. On really hot days I put a gallon jug full of ice in my pond. I think it really helps.

These fish are in a swimming pool right ? Pretty shallow ? How large is your big pond ? Do you have water thats 5' deep or deeper ? If you do the water temp at that dept should be cool enough for fish.

Good luck saving the rest
Keith

Frown Have lost about 30 fish now I move them to a small holding tank with a recuricalater pump I am hoping this will solve the problem. Since the water quality was very good and the water was cool I thought I would be ok, the water is from by big pond 16x16x3' deep the holding tank is also about 3' deep. Lost some nice fish with this learning experence wont let this happen again. keep you finger crossed that this works the water that is being pumped to small tank is from main pond where I keep my big koi. Could kick my butt for not gathering more info before starting this project. I believe it was the oxgein that caused the problem. but had lost alot more fish by morning so I moved them. The pool was 950 gal. with a 1000per hour pump that I installed last night but this morning had lost a large number of my fishUnsure.

Re: [koifishgirl] Help big problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Judy,
Sorry for your fishes. It happens to everyone. Even when you have ideal pond conditions, new fish may still die.
Yesterday, I bought some fish and was pretty happy with my purchase. Remember the 500 holding tank that I was raising my little fishes in? It has been established for 1 and 1/2 months now and the fingerlings I have are healthy so I know the water params are good.
Then I moved the fingerlings to another tank, using the same established water. I then put the new arrivals in the 500 gallon tank to quarantine them. There was plenty of aeration, good water params, but I lost 4 of them today.

Sometimes there is nothing you can do since new fish you get may be diseased even when not showing symptoms.
I am currently treating the new ones for flukes since they are gasping like yours are. In my case, there is plenty of air, so the only other thing to assume are the gill flukes. The fingerlings are fine. I am glad I am quarantining and not ever infecting my koi in the main pond.

So, don't beat yourself up, it happens.

That's okay Eric. At least they were in quarantine when they died. Better not to infect the main population of my koi. Or else I won't have any pictures to post anymore.

no, only 4 smaller fish that I bought yesterday. The fry/fingerlings that I bought (40 last month) are fine. I did not combine them with the new arrivals. Quarantine, remember? It will save your established koi!
