High nitrites in fry pond...normal??? Can't Post

Hi
I'm not that new to koi keeping, but this is the first year I've kept eggs to hatch.
I put the eggs in a seperate pond (50 gal.) and they've been hatched for 1 1/2 weeks now.
Here's my question...the nitrites are testing VERY high...Is this normal? I'm scared I'm going to lose the babies. I lost 6 large koi during the spawning due to ammonia spike (broke my heart).
All other tests check out fine. And fry don't seem stressed and are eating well.
Thanks in advance for replies.

sorry to hear theat, but your not the only one who loses koi all the time, i lose koi alot. but not for a few months , i think maybe 6 months, i m really happy that the racoons have gone away.

well to get rid of i think your nitrate problem, try adding a TT( Trickle Tower) this can be a crate with hot glued or silicone glued shell, rocks on it. then pump water up on top of the tower, note that crat must be tightly, but let a hole go through a so water can go on top of it, also note that the tower must be above the water, this is a cheap way of controlling nitrate that many koi kichis do. this takes about a week to start working properly.

how big are youre koi, and how big is your pond.

My main pond is about 1,000 gal. I've still got 7 nice koi (and a couple large goldfish), but of course, it was my favorites that died. I've gone 2 years without a death. This years spawn was especially violent and we had nitrite and ammonia spikes that I just couldn't control.

khaku2, thanks for the prompt reply. But my problem is with nitrItes, not nitrAtes. Nitrates check out fine too. I've done 2-50% water changes in the last few days and the nitrites haven't come down much at all. I'm getting frustrated. Is this normal and I'm just kicking a dead horse?

Thanks!

add some papyrus or umbrella palm that might work

your bio-filter in the new 50 gallon might not be mature yet.
try moving some old biomedia to the new one.

oh yes moving bio-media around from the old pond maybe 10 or 12 pieces should really get your other biofilter going, depending on what kind of media you have,

hey i got a question is the tetra clearchoice pf 1,2,or 3 a 'good' filter, if you have a small pond???

With high nitrite, I guess one of the best and quickest way is to change some water to the value back to safe level.

Cheers

If u have not already done so, remove all of the old spawning media. It will be covered in dead or decaying eggs as well as invisible koi milt that will continue to create spike no matter what u do.

Thanks, I didn't think before about that affecting water quality so bad...now I know. Thinking that I needed the plants for oxygen, I was leaving them in the pond (plants were the hosts of all the eggs until they hatched). Coincidentally, a couple days ago I did remove the plants, cleaned them up and put them in another pond.
Nitrites are coming down, almost safe now. Everyday is a learning experience!
Little fish are doing great.

Thank you very much to all of you who replied to my plea for help.
