I think the easy answer is that it's not about size but more to do with age and maturity. I'd say the fish has to be at least 2years old to start spawning. At 2 years old, u could have a koi that is 5-6inches (12-15cm) (those overly inbred poor quality kois) or 24inches (60cm) Momotaro kois.

Thanks for your help hopefully my koi will spawn shortly because my femal which is 8-10" is fully bloated with eggs
