You don't want Green Water. Fry's normally feed on Daphnia which is prepared by breeders prior to breeding. If they're really small, a pinch of a boiled egg yolk will do. Do not over do it as it will foul the water and besides they don't eat that much. There are a lot of other nutrients and microscopic food in the water that they can eat.

There are also fry foods that they sell in Aquarium and Fish stores. In fact I saw frozen Daphnia at my local Aquarium store just the other day. You won't need much of it because they grow fast in the 1st month.

Once they get large enough (depends on growing speed: 2 weeks to a month) you can feed crushed flakes or pellets.

I keep reading about daphnia and brineshrimp. But they're not readily available in some parts of the world.

I know even after hatching they nourish on their remaining yolk-sac for a while. Thereafter they'll need food. If they're able to feed on tiny particles in the water, then you don;t really have to worry about hatchlings until they're big enough for crushed food?

Also... I'm not clear on how to aerate and filter the water, since the bubbles can hurt them and pump can suck and squash them.

If you want to raise your own in a separate fry ( I use one of these vegetable bins which holds about 200 gals of water) tank, an underwater filtration system would work temporarily. You could "DIY" an underwater gravel filter.

By a small cheapie circulating pump. Put it at the bottom and in the middle of the tank. Get some 3" or 4" PVC pipes and 4 elbows and use it as a framing around the inside of the tank (Must be high enough to clear the height of the pump, which will create a gap for water circulation underneat). Get what they call "Egg Crates" looks like one of those flouresent light fixtures made out of plastic with grids, and put that on top, then line the top with some stainless window screening. Put Aquarium Gravel on top (not sand). The return line could be splashed back into a corner of the tank through some large rocks to create some aeration.

You could put a splitter on the return line and the end of one of them would have a valve going outside the tank for when you want to dump and replace water.

I want to stress that this is just temporarily since the gunk is getting trapped inside the sand and at the bottom of the tank. Minor disease problems can be controlled with a little Methelyne Blue. But all we're trying to do here is keep the water clear until the fish are big enough that we can modify the setup for proper filtration. It doesn't take long for fry's to get big enough so that they don't get sucked into the pump. Under proper conditions, it takes about 3 weeks to a month.

Hope this makes sense.
