I have babies...and pictures! Can't Post

Hi everybody! I haven't been around here for a while since it was winter and everything, but now it is spring and everything has come back to life. We even have a small school of baby fish in our pond. I don't know if they are pure koi or if they are koi/comet mutts (sp?) but they are fun to watch and hopefully a few of them will live.

I was kind of thinking that the lighter colored ones were koi babies and the dark ones were the koi/comet babies but I'm not sure...

Hi Kid,

Glad to see you backWink Check your babies for barbels and by 3" you should be able to tell if they are koi or notSmile

Follow Jon's advice on the barbel inspection. Any that don't have them you may as well dispatch, otherwise you'll have a pond full of very ugly fishiesTongue
Color is meaningless for telling the difference between Koi and Crossbreeds. We had such an incredible variety of color last year from our spawnings it was amazing. Just enjoy the showWink.

Re: [larz1] I have babies...and pictures! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the replies! I will keep checking to see if they are koi or not but I don't think I can wait for them to be 3" long.Laugh How many months will it take? By the end of the summer will they be that big? Hopefully I'll be able to catch the ones I don't want and bring them to my lfs and get credit for them or something. But I'm also hoping that they will be koi babies so we can keep them and let them grow! I have another question about growth rates...my 3 biggest koi are all 10-12" long, how big should they be by the end of the summer? I know they have grown, but I was just wondering how big they should get by the time they have been in the pond for about 2 summers. I kind of wish that I lived in the south so they could grow all year long but it gets a bit too cold here for that so I'll just have to wait.Smile

Re: [fishkid] I have babies...and pictures! [In reply to] Can't Post

Growth rates can vary for a variety of reasons. Genetics are #1, feeding regimin #2, and growing season #3 (at least that's the order I'd put them inSmile). Since you're in So. Dakota your growing season is short, so you can't expect the kind of growth they get in the Gulf Coast, but with a good feeding regimin of high quality food you will maximize the potential their genetics have to offer.
What type of feed do you use and do you give them a variety? A good mix of high protien food with minimal cornmeal content is important (they don't digest corn very well) combined with fresh greens, shrimp, some veggies, and fruit makes all the difference.
The size of pond makes a difference too. If it is crowded, they won't grow as well.

Re: [larz1] I have babies...and pictures! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the help larz. I don't know how well their genetics are because I just got them from a local fish store that gets them in when they are pretty small. (And if they were bigger they would probably cost too much for me anyways) Right now all they are getting is their Tetra Pond Food, and the occasional sinking shrimp pellet that I give to my blind comet goldfish.Cool Today I was actually planning on trying some other foods, but the problem is, they've never liked to eat anything else. I've tried oranges and they taste it but spit it back out. They are pigs but only if its the same type of food. But I'll try some veggies and see if they like them...they should be hungry enough by the time I go to work tonight and they might eat it. Anyways the pond isn't overstocked or anything, it has 6 koi and its about 1,200 gallons. Once these baby koi grow up it will be overstocked but I don't plan on keeping them all.

P.S. I just remembered...one time I was eating sunflower seeds and I de-shelled a couple and spit them in the pond, and I think the fish ate them. Crazy

Re: [fishkid] I have babies...and pictures! [In reply to] Can't Post

Strange that they don't like oranges, but I think water differences also influence their appetites as to what tastes good. Some people have good luck with watermelon, pumpkin, spinach, dark leaf lettuce, (not iceburg, which has 000.000 nutritional value). It's good that they go after the shrimp as it is high protien and good for color development. You might try some fresh earth worms or red worms (fish bait). Lots of fresh protien and they usually love themCool.

2years: Yep, I tried the earthworms as well as the watermelon and they love them!! They usually spit out the watermelon but they went nuts over the worms. What can you expect I guess...they're fish! It's a good thing they like the earthworms so much but I'd like them to eat their veggies as well.Laugh I feel like I'm talking about a little kid or something. Re: [s_clan] I have babies...and pictures! [In reply to] Can't Post

Well we now have at least 50 babies in the pond, some colorful, others plain grey. It's starting to cool down here now and I was wondering how many of them will survive the winter. The first batch is pretty big now, they're all from about 2-3 inches in length. I'm not so sure about the second batch surviving though, they are still about 1.5 inches and smaller...I was thinking about taking a few of those inside for the winter because they have really nice coloration.

fishkid...

Sad to say, but there is definately no doubt that you may loose some of them throught the winter.....

I would think the bigger ones would have a greater chance.....but as you said some small ones have good coloration....if you are really fond of them....I suggest you keep them indoor...cuz they get greater chance of survival...Wink

You got current pics by any chance?

I don't have any pictures of the babies since they have grown, I'll maybe get a few pictures if it warms up a little. However, one day I decided to go take a few pictures of our new water lily's flower. Enjoy!

Re: [John Bloch] I have babies...and pictures! [In reply to] Can't Post

The verdict on what?

The plant in the pictures is just some lily that my local greenhouse pond guy had received from someone. He gave it to me because of all the business we've given him and it turned out to be nicer than the other lily that we payed $30 for. I've since repotted the other lily though so hopefully it will grow a bit bigger next summer.

Re: [s_clan] I have babies...and pictures! [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok, let me re-explain. My old directions kind of even confused me.Sly

1. At the bottom where there is a button that says "Browse..." to the right is a box with "Inline" next to it-click that box.
2. Next click the button that says "Browse..." and find your file in your computer, and open it.
3. To the right of where it says "Inline" click the "Upload attachment" button.
4. Now your attachment with your picture in it should appear just about all the buttons you have been clicking. Now you need to click on the little button at the top of the screen that has the picture icon. A small window pops up with a couple of options. It should have the "Image Location" circle already selected, you need to select the "Inline Image" circle. Then your picture's name should come up at the bottom of that little window. You then click the circle next to your picture, and hit "Submit" and voila...pictures on your post. You can only use this procedure 2 times for each post.
Hopefully these directions are a little clearer and help you out.

Anywho, tonight I was fishing some leaves out of the pond, and I decided to do a bit of actual fishing. Using my net I caught a few of the babies, including the colorful one posted above in one of the old pictures. I don't think they are actually koi because they are about 2-3", some of them even bigger, and they don't have barbels. I still like the colorful ones though, so I'll keep them as my little mutt friends and use the ugly ones for walleye bait.Tongue

Ah, I just knew that skyline's weren't legal in the U.S. and there a quite a few people in the forums here who live in Japan. So I suppose you're getting the pond ready for winter? I still need to take out my elephant ears and umbrella plant, they already got the leaves frosted.
