The basket was probably knocked over during the mating.

If you know which koi is the mother you need to inspect her closly as she could have got a bit battered during the mating session.

If she has any visible wounds, treat her accordingly.

All you can do now is wait for the eggs to hatch. Make sure the water parameters are ok and te temperature does not drop below 10C.

Once you see a black shining dot in the egg you have about a week before they hatch.

So sit back and relax and wait for father hood Sly.

Hi there,

Make sure you put enough oxygen bubbles and the water is clean.

If I remember correctly, by putting a little bit of malachite green will be better in order to kill some bacterias that might be harmful to the eggs.

Sometimes, the koi might lay eggs due to new environment as well.Did you introduce a new female koi into your pond? Then it could be your new female koi that lay eggs.Just a guess anyway.Wink

bcktang,

Congratulation :) ...well..I would suggest you to pick those that are healthy and big. Those small size fry just let them go at some rivers, ponds or lakes.

Do you know what type the parent kois are? If those doesn't show any sign/colour and pattern of the parents koi, then you can take them away. Let say, if both parent kois are kohaku, then pick those that are bigger and has the characteristic of kohaku.

Those fry with whole white body and whole black...you can cull them away. This will encourage the growth of other better kois.Otherwise your pond will be over crowded.

Feed the fry with very fine fish pellet(powder form) or tetra bit...just a suggestion..

Egg yolk is also an aternative but I don't know how good it is..:)

I wouldn't cull any just yet,

Wait a few weeks. All my last spawn were black/green. Two weeks later the black/green changed to a shusui with metlic head. Parents where shusui and yamabuki.

Wow Tang

COngratulations on being a koi parent!Smile They are too tiny to cull as yet. If you can separate them into a tank and make sure the water quality is good. Lots of aerationas well. Feed them with powdered fish food.

Wait for a week or two before deciding what you want to keep and cull the rest. By culling, I mean you can sell to aquarium shops. Flower horn keepers buy them to feed their fishes. Just a suggestion. If you find that cruel, release them into a pond somewhere.

Re: [bcktang] I have eggsssssssssss......... [In reply to] Can't Post

bcktang,

You must have some kind of super baby koi. The eggs hatched in 4 days? I thought they normally take 1-2 weeks?

Based on the experience of hatching goldfish, you can start with boiled egg yolk, mix it with water until it is fully desolved in water, then feed sparingly to the koi. Another method is to feed them with liquid food that you can buy from fish shop. When they are bigger, if you can find live feed called "boon", it will be very nutritious to the koi and they will grow very fast from there.

Try to keep the water level low since they need to start develop their swim bladder. Don't aerate the water so much that the baby koi cannot swim and being pushed back and forth.

Good Luck,

Patrick

That's really very quick. In any case, I don't remember the liquid food name but it comes in a tube form...like a small tooth paste.

Make sure you don't put too much and polute the water. If possible, try to find the live feed. It is cleaner and the fries grow much quicker with it. In Singapore, it is called "Boon" in hokkien, something like small brine shrimp.

On the culling, probably Stuart will be the best to advise. Smile

Cheers,

Patrick

Re: [patrick123] I have eggsssssssssss......... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Congratulations on being a dad Wink.

Its important to seperate these fry form other koi, which I'm sure you have already done. I imagine that the eggs you found were already a week or so old. Eggs start off yellow when first spawned by the female and then they start to turn white. A black shiny dot appears in the eggs 2 days before they hatch. At this stage they are about 9 days old.

It's important that you don't feed these babies normal koi food at the moment as they will try and eat anything you give them no matter how big. Most babies that have been spawned un-noticed and stay in the pond develop lock jaw from trying to eat pellets that are too big for them.

Ok, with regards to the culling. How many koi do you have ?. Do you have a filter running in the tank that they are living?. Most colours will not be present for a week or so. Some can take up to a year to develop. If you have room then I would try and keep as many as possible. if you have any plain white ones then these are the ones that should be culled first. Most koi are born black/green which is their natural colour.

Do you have any pictures ?

Hey Chee Kin!

Don't try to cull them 1st lah, try to grow them big enough, cause sometimes things are very hard to say, maybe they are becoming very pretty.

Egg yokes are good enugh lah, and if you want to, you can crush the koi pallets into powder form and feed them! Thats all! :) Anything just call me lah! since i live so near you!

John

Hey John

Since you know Tang, why not persuade him to let you choose a few babies! He won't be able to keep them all anyway!Wink Who knows, you are now able to pick a good one from the crowd.

Hey Chee Kin

Wah...so much died? how come? Anything attacked? is water good enough?

Try to change the water, change about 20% twice a week, maybe ammonia too much, and top-up 0.1% of salt in the water. And remember to put anti-chlorine!

Hope your water is fine then! :)

Cheers!

Re: [newgen] I have eggsssssssssss......... [In reply to] Can't Post

an uncountable number died today,

i didnt have lunch just to change the water, i m rather sad, n fed up, coz it really need a lot of time to take care of all of them,

sigh....., next time they breed again, will know what to do n what not to do,

so hopefully those that i still have live till they r big, n if all of them does, i'll most probably release some of them to a lake,

Re: [bcktang] I have eggsssssssssss......... [In reply to] Can't Post

another update

more than a month since the eggs r laid, and many many died, but those that r stronger are still surviving, and grown bigger,

1 or 2 dies occasionally, so hopefully i will still have about 100 by the time they grown up, now have more than 100 fry, swimming happily,

most of them has black pattern already, waiting for the reds to appear, so that's all for now

Hi, Tang

Sound very interesting to have baby kois from your own kois. Why not post their picture for us to see? Thks.

I have some questions to ask the experienced or the expert:

1. Anybody ever make serious study on how to differentiate local kois from Japanese/taiwanese/china breed kois.

2. Sometimes, I see kois that are distinctively short and belly of about 12" - can I assume that they are neither Japanese nor china or cold countries breed ? Will local kois grow to a jumbo size? If not, what is the possible size?

3. I understand Taiwanese breed kois are not nice also but their climate is colder than here in singapore and malaysia. what is the possible reason?

4.China breed are closer to Japanese because of climatic reason - right? Can u tell the difference between the two?

Rgds.SlyCool
