Is this tank suitable for spawning? Can't Post

Hi Stuart, Dr Tan & all koi experts ...
I need some advise on whether I am preparing a spawning tank correctly, size of FG tank is 5'x3'x2'. I wonder if this tank is big enough for 1 female of 35cm, 2 males about 40cm. This is the first time I am setting up a tank just for spawning, previously experiences I got was quite by accident. I also prepared 4 bunches of spawning media which I made from rafia ropes, plus 2 dusters which are made of fine nylon threads. The tank is running through a drum filter for about 10 days now, I put in 2 small fishes to test the water and throw in a small amount of food during this period. I wonder if the tank is ready for transfering the 3 kois??? How can I tell if the conditions are right? Please share your views and comments - thanks a lot!!Smile
Regards, Micky

Hello guys!

Mind to let me tell out my idea? and correct them if i'm wrong?

OK...here it goes...

Uncle Mike! Since you have prepared your breeding tank with water, use 2 pumps to exchange the water of the main tank and breeding tank...by keeping the pumps running for 1 or 2 hours, you can even up the "old" and the "new" water, so the kois can get used to the new water condition. But your breeding tank's water must be clean and dechlorinated.

So by then, you'll be safe to transfer the kois!

Am i right? Please advice!

Cheers!
John

Micky,

I have not tried spawning koi before, but I have done it for gold fish and hopefully can help to answer some of your questions.

The spawning is triggered by a change of environment. Before that, you have to separate the male and female koi for a few weeks. Then, when the temperature is right, I think is around 20-22 degrees, you introduce them into the spawning tank. I think the FG tank size you mentioned is good enough. Just have to be aware that spawning activity can be quite violent, so make sure no sharp edges or rock of any kind around. Put in the spawning rope and hope for the best. It usually happens in early morning. After the spawning, you have to remove the parents and separate the male and female in different hosital tank to let them recuperate. This is to avoid un-monitored spawning and cause more injury to the koi.

To do all these, you need at least 3-4 tank. In our normal house, there is no way to do this without turning your house into a fish farm.

Also, only 1-2% of the baby will turn out to be trophy winner, so at the end of the day, is it worth the effort and the risk of losing your most precious prized parent kois for it.

I heard that a koi dealer in Singapore has borrowed a customer's Janpanese Grand Champion Ki-goi worth S$80K to breed baby koi. At the end of the session, the mother koi died due to exhaustion.

May be is better to just go and buy instead of breeding.

Cheers,
Patrick

Hi John
Good idea about the pumps which makes sense to kick start the bios, but to keep it running this way throughout it may run counter to my purpose. You see, in the past when my kois spawned in the main pond the process created a big mess. So this time, I setup a seperate FG just for spawning so that awter condition in main pond do not get fouled up. BTW, this new tanks has been running with 2 telapias for about 10 days now .. all water parameters is good. I am just not sure if the size is big enough. Thanks for your response.Smile

Hi Patrick
Thanks for the tips!
Actually the main purpose is not to breed kois (see my reply to John), but this time I am giving it a shot just for the experience. You are probably right about having many tanks, I run the risk of turning my house into a fish farm! Blush I have several large Togoyos containers which I intend to use for seperating the frys, if the eggs ever hatched.

About the $80K koi, I also heard something about the incident, in fact I had 3 of the offsprings! Are you refering to the prize winning orangy Aka-muji? Cheers!Smile

Micky,

That's the one I'm talking about. I was shock when I saw the babies. At 6 months, they are already 20-25cm. But the price is high for a orangy aka-muji, the jumbo ones run for about S$250-400. So you got three of them. How do they turn out? How big are they now? Do you have pictures to show?

As for your koi, I think it is a good experience, but there is a lot of work and you have to cull the fry very often or you may risk inhibiting their growth in a small environment. Also, we do not have the trained eyes to cull fries like the Japanense Sifu, so the fries we cull may not be the right ones. Also, unless you are pairing up the parents of the same type, e.g. kohaku with kohaku, sanke with sanke, otherwise, you will have a lot of funny looking offspring.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Cheers,
Patrick

Hi Patrick
Small world, I am not sure if I got conned into buying but the 3 kois turned out quite well. At 3 months they were 14, 18 & 20cm, now at 8 months they are 26, 30 & 38cm. I was told the largest one is a jumbo.

The breeding may well turn out to be quite "rojak", let's see if it successful and nice enough to be given away. If you like to be kept in the loop about this, I will let you know in a couple of month's time. Cheers!Smile

Micky,

The price of the fish very much dependent on their size. They are all born together, and some of the slow growing ones are discarded. The fast growing one are sold between $250-400 depending on how fast they grow. In your case, even the smallest one at 26cm in 8 months is already quite amazing.

I have seen koi from other farm that is only 10cm at 6months age and claim that the parents are jumbo (80bu).

In any case, please keep us posted. How is the body shape of your orangy aka-muji? I find that the babies body are quite long.

okok.....

sorry to leave out some points!

i know that spawning is a mess! well...i know what to do now!

LOL! actually is like this...actually...

i was trying to say that...after you let the pumps running for 2 or 3 hours or so...the water will be even up right? after that, you can off those pumps and let the tanks run a their own filter system...

By so, you can put the kois that you want them to spawn in the breeding tank now...so even when they spawn, your main tank won't get a mess! but you'll have to move your kois out after they have breed, so you'll need another Q tank to let them rest!Crazy

Make sure the pilapias are not in the breeding tank...ekeke! If not..they might end up getting fatter!Sly

OK! Will wait and get some good news from you soon!

Cheers!
John
