Dear Mookey

It depends where you live, Here in England i have only just had my first spawning last thursday.

But we did have a long winter, last year i had spawnings in april. A few years back in the house i used to live in the last spawning they had was september.

They will do it when they feel like it.

Keep om top of things like water peramitors and the diet, and make sure the have a place to do the deed on.Blush

Good luck

Hey Mookey,

To answer your question..... You don't really want to consider when koi spawn by a certain month. The date of spawning is only a basic guideline. To get them to spawn under a controlled condition you need to trick them. The first thing to consider is which koi you want to spawn. If you are just doing a flock spawning then you will need to remove the female to another pond or atleast divide your pond and keep her separate for a few weeks prior to spawning. The introduction of new koi is one of the triggering mechanisms.

Secondly, you need to do something to change the chemistry of the water. Usually a drop in temps will do it. Speaking of temps, they should be above 68F for atleast a few weeks. Then with the female separated from the males do a large water change on the breeding pond. I usually do about 60%. After the water change is complete introduce the males to her.

Even though koi will lay eggs on about everything, keep plenty of vegetation around. I like plastics. They are reusable every year.

If all goes right, they will spawn a few days afterwards. I have had them spawn the night after introducing them.

hope this helps

Thanks Utsuri,
Should I introduce new plastic follage? that is what I did last year..and it is still in the pond..maybe that doesn't excite them..don't know..but, willing to get more..I know last year when I put the plastic in the pond, the next day they spawned..will keep ya' updated..
thanks again

Hey Mookey,
Ithink what you have will do just fine. What you added last year could have been what they needed. I get too busy with everything so I need them do the deed on my time. If your pond has been above 68 degrees for a few weeks then a large water change will drop the temp a few degrees and off they go.

Trying to figure out how to get pics and vids on here to share.

Yes stay in touch. Curious to see how things go.

This year they seem to be running late in my neck of the woods (Oklahoma). I think the weather patterns are delaying things. My female Sanke spawned in April last year. Last night she spawned in the Q-tank, knocked the lid off the tank, and jumped outFrownFrownFrown. It has not been a good year at our house for Koi breedingUnsure.

Sorry to hear that. It has been a long time since I have lost a koi. Hopefully I can go a lot longer. My koi are like dogs to me and would be devastated. My guys were a little late this year too. I had to do with irraddic temps in the spring. I got them going on May 5th.

anybody know how to post pics or vids in this forum?

Are the females nice and plump? What is the water temp before you lower temps? How long has it been at that temp?

I do have babies. Want some? I am way overcrowded!!!!!! I just did the first culling last weekend. I will post some pics of the little guys tonight.

Sorry Mookie I can't get my pics posted here. I take them at high resolution because I am tracking the fry as they age. So detail is important. I will get some lower resolution pics the next time I take some. A few weeks.
