Koi Breeding Crisis Can't Post

Hello All,

I had been planning on spawning two of the koi's in my fish pond this year. I did last year with minimal success but have done much studying and preparing since then. I had recently set up two kiddie pools one to breed the fish in and the other to use water changes with. I moved my female a couple of days to the kiddie pool by herself because it was warming up and I was afraid that they would spawn in the fish pond and I would lose all the fry. I came home this afternoon and the female who had been in the kiddie pool for 2 days had LAID HER EGGS BY HERSELF!!!! I didn't expect or know that the females could release their eggs without the male but it happened. I'm not sure of the time because I was at work and school today and didn't get home till this afternoon. I immediately caught my male and put him with her and they began to spawn right AWAY! Will the eggs that she laid be no good since they weren't fertilized upon being released or will they still be good if he fertilized them during the spawning? Any help or suggestions I would appreciate. Thanks.

Joel

Hi Joel

You will know in due time by looking at the colour of the eggs as I have mentioned in one of your other post. As a koi will lay hundreds of thousands of eggs at each spawn you will have enough to deal with. Do remember to treat the eggs esp with antifungal as any unfertilised eggs will attract fungal infection.

Keep us informed of your attempt.

Regards,

Re: [dtbh] Koi Breeding Crisis [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the advice but it has been 10 days now and there is no sign of life among my pool where the koi's spawned. After removing the adults we experienced some cool nights down into the 40's and 50's and I'm not sure how weather affects the eggs. I have never treated them with an antifungal because I don't know what to use and then have heard that it can cause damage. For next time what do you use to treat the eggs? I'm assuming from this experience that there is a time frame in which the koi eggs can be fertilized. I had to learn this lesson the hard way, but next year I will never put my female anywhere without my male.

Thanks for all your help, I guess I will take my lessons learned and start planning for next year.

10 days already, huh? Use the formula 100 divided by the temperature in Celsius and you get the number of days it will take to hatch. How do the eggs look to you? Translucent or opague white? Any fungus? I treat them with antifungal after I have removed the parents (used malachite green).

I usually put the male first followed by the female. In fact I did just that yesterday and my oyagoi spawned this morning. I have treated the eggs with malachite green. I will post some photos when I have the time.

Good luck to your future attempts.
