Koi Eggs and Hatching Time Can't Post

How can you distinguish between good and bad koi eggs while they are hatching?

How long does it take for the eggs to hatch?

Thanks

not a pro here, just experienced my first hatch less than a month ago.

they will hatch between 4-7 days depending on temp. Easiest way to tell what is good/bad for me was to let them hatch up to 7 days then removing the spawning media from my indoor tank where I was hatching the fry.

Dear jmaybe

Bad eggs are opague white while good eggs are translucent.

Hatching time may be expected by 100 divided by the water temperature in Celsius eg water temp 25degC takes 100/25 = 4 days.

Hope this helps.

How long does it take the koi fry to become a couple of inches big? and to be able to see the markings on their back.

Does there color come out immeadiately or do you have to wait an see when theyre bigger?

Hi lilhelper

Growth rates involves too many variables eg good water, overcrowding, water temp, feeding frequency etc. In any spawn there will be kois that grow much faster than others and there are these dreaded tobi kois that eat their ownkind. I cannot remember how fast mind grew as I did not keep track. Maybe you can look at "Kohaku babies" under "Koi Appreciation" where I may have mentioned their growth rates.

Colour? It depends on what types the kois are. For kois with sumi one can see black by 3 days and that is why they are culled from then. Kohakus are orangy pretty fast too but I could only see some semblance of pattern at one month. That was when I started to cull.

Cheers.

You see that fat orange koi fish on the left.... whats up with that? I feed the fish equally, and its only like 5" long maybe 6"

Re: [Viet01av6] Koi Eggs and Hatching Time [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there

I am really a novice at breeding as I have just tried once and, encouraged by my 1st attempt's results, am in the midst of the 2nd attempt where the eggs are expected to hatch this Friday.

There must be a thread here on this topic but from what I have read, any mature koi should be able to spawn. However professional breeders only use parents that are >4-5yrs old for better results.

As for the koi in your pic, I would like to know how old is that koi. I have seen kois >3yrs that are still that size (hence they should be matured enough to have eggs). The other possibility is the food it has consumed as some food do cause a big belly.

Hope this helps.
