Koi Fry?!?!?! Can't Post

Our pond is not even 2 months old and already we have fry!! So I have a few questions:

1. The parents I believe are our two biggest koi at 10", which I thought was pretty small to be breeding. Normally how big are koi when they start breeding? I've heard they will breed at a smaller size if the pond is lightly stocked-ours is 1,200 gallons with 8 small koi.

2. How old are they? Right now they are about 1cm long.

3. How fast will they grow?

4. Will they survive by just hiding in the our rocks? I plan on just letting nature take its course as I don't have anyplace to keep them to grow them.

Thanks in advance for your help!! I might find some of these answers as I look on the web tonight but I thought I'd ask.

10" parents are capable of reproducing, although most breeders wait until they are bigger. (Bigger females produce larger eggs which improves viability).
We got surprised the same way this spring as 2 of our females (also abt. 10") spawned. We did manage to seperate most of the eggs from the 1st spawn to a kiddie pool, but about a dozen hatched in the main pond and survived hiding amongst the rocks. The second spawn happened about 1 month later at night so all of the fry from it were on their own. Not as many survivors, but several dozen toughed it out.Smile

Ok, thanks larz!! I think my fry are just a couple days old because of how small they are and due to the fact that we just saw them for the first time last night. Sly

I would feed them, but we only see them at night so I'm just going to let them do their own thing, if they live they live, if they don't thats fine with me. Whats the water hyacinth for?? I have lots of lettuce plants...

Re: [fishkid] Koi Fry?!?!?! [In reply to] Can't Post

lilhelper is at school so I'll chime in. Water Hyacinth float with their roots hanging down into the water. They make great cover for fry to hide in and the roots tend to gather tiny bits of algae in the water which gives the fry baby food and cover. Their roots are like hairy bottle brushes sweeping your pond while they float aroundSmile.
They'll get by on algae for a while (as they do in the wild), but when they start getting 1/2"-3/4" long I would start crumbling some koi food and sprinkling it in their favorite hangouts. It will give them a little variety and help them grow more quickly. Once they get over 1 1/2" they will begin munching on pellets by pecking away at them.

Re: [larz1] Koi Fry?!?!?! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the help Larz! I pretty much already have a whole blanket of water lettuce which is just like the hyacinth you are describing, roots hanging down for cover and food. That's just where they were hanging out, because the lettuce always stays there, I have fishing line to keep it in place. And if they grow to 1/2" or 3/4" I will start giving them some pellets too!Wink

Happy to help. (I've gotten so much help here most of what I have to give is what I've already received). One thing that surprized me about the fry that survived on their own in our pond was their growth rate. The ones we seperated to hatch in their own pool were fed special food (liquifry & brine shrimp) while the ones in the main pond hid out and fended for themselves. They grew 4 times faster than their pampered siblingsSmile!

larz: That's interesting about your fry growth rates...maybe the ones in the pond knew they had to grow fast so they were too big to be eaten.Laugh

Llook like I am in same boat as the other guy. I just put koi for 5 day and the next thing i know is there are thousand of fries in pond and 1st settlement.

The problem is I suppose to clean the 1st settlemet coz it is full with fish waste and dirt especially at the brushes, and thousand of fry is using the brushes as the hiding place.

So what should I do? Don't think i can catches the fries, there are about 1mm only and sure to dies if i net them.

On the other hand what I going to get if father is Shusui and the mother either showa or doitsu white?.... Mutant?

It sounds like you've gotten a really big surprizeShocked! One of the sad realities is that no matter what you do some fry will always be lostFrown. Netting them will not be as harmful as you might think. A fine mesh aquarium net works well, but the question remains as to where you will put them? You will need some sort of small pool or tank to transfer them to. It doesn't have to be fancy, just green water and air. No pumps for a few weeks until they get bigger. Those which hide from you and remain in the pond will likely do better than you think tooSmile.
As far as the mixed parents go, don't worry. The parents of my koi were shiro bekko, kinrin kawarigoi, and sanke. The offspring include many beautiful koi including kohaku, kinginrin ochiba, ki utsuri, tancho, sanke, tancho sanke, ogon, yamabuki hariwake, kinrin and ginrin bekko, and even asagi. Mixing different species is how many of the most beautiful bloodlines came into existenceCool.

The fries really caught me by suprisePirate... I know some of the kois have egg for nearly a years so really didn't expected them to lay then in clean pond ( the small pond have long algea at the wall and floor). We try to net the fish but having problem transfering them as the net with fine mesh is too big and have protective plasticMad. Well guess have to buy new one.

Anyway Thank for all the helpSmile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi State, I would just leave the fry alone as they have a good place to hid in the string algie and have plenty to eat and should grow well in the main pond with the other koi, the older and bigger koi will get tired of the chace and leave them along.

It would be really easy work just to left the fry in pond and let them fend for themselves. But, the pond is a new one so there are no algea in the pond yetFrown. only yestrerday the water started to turn green and can see algea sprouting from the pond wall. hope it help the little fries.

When I though thing can't get any worse ( or better), another fish decide to spawn. and this time I think more rough..
So rough there lots of eggs that are 3 inches above water level Shocked. Can the egg survival if there are water drip that will keep the egg constantly wet?

Can you raise the water level to cover the eggs? I am not sure if that will work or not but it is at least worth a try. If not dont worry as you will have plenty of fry.
The water turning green at this time is good because the little fry will have food small enough in the water for them to eat. Unless you just have very large numbers of fry I would not worry to much about feeding after they hatch. In a couple of weeks put some of your koi food in a blender and grind into a very fine power. You can also hatch some brine shrimp eggs to feed, this would be a good thing to do after they hatch as you can make sure that they have enough to eat. Just make sure that you do not over feed and let uneaten food lay on bottom of pond. If you have some place to move the large fish you wont have to worry about the large koi eating the fry.

you can always just get some bird netting and let the fry swim in there for protection just make sure the wholes are not to big for some of the fish and not to small for the frySmile basically just make it like a big net that stays in the water all the time... just make sure when frys grow they arnt trapped and eventually you will remove the nettingWink good luck!
Thanks Marshall

Good call MarshallSmile. Using a net screen is pretty much what we did with our pond fry and it worked well. The little guys could go in and out but the adults couldn't. Once everyone in the pond got comfortable with each other the net came out (and they all lived happily ever afterAngelic)

I can't raise the water level, so i just have to forget about them. Well I just let the pond turn real green, so green that I can't even see the big fish.. Hope this will help the fries.. and the fries that going to hatch because my brother and i decide to let the new one to fend themselves in the pond or the settlement.
