Koi and Goldfish Breeding Question Can't Post

I am new to the forum, and have enjoyed reading the tips on Koi breeding. I agree that it may not be worth a major investment for most of us, especially since I have been very successful in growing koi and goldfish. (If I buy them small and cheap and they grow well, that is most of what I am looking for).

I was told to start with feeder goldfish in a new pond to see how they did before adding expensive koi. Of 3 dozen feeders I think I still have 15 or so, 3 or more years later, and they are probably 6-8 inches long, and very full-bodied. The koi I added are now 18 - 24 inches or so (never really measure them) and also quite full-figured (length is not the only measure which counts, and let's not go any further with this line of thought, OK?). FYI, I have never paid more than $15 for a fish (since size increases price, I have significantly added size/value to my fish by caring for them).

I understand koi and goldfish can interbreed, and I think I have raised a couple of goldfish which hatched in the pond (and weren't eaten by filters and pumps) as I noticed fish smaller than what I had put in anywhere near that point in time.

My question involves the breeding material. I am pleased that a string-type mop head (that is the right type, right?) esp. dark in color is a good material, but always thought goldfish like/require slate rock to place their eggs (though again, I am pretty sure I hatched a couple of g.f. and don't have any slate in the pond). Will the mop work for both?

It would be nice to have a few real babies grow in the pond or various tanks (I have a large indoor and a small indoor and the fairly large outdoor tank now up and running). Pumps and filters will be a problem, but thinking maybe if I can watch for eggs and then protect them from the inlets or reduce pumping for a week or so, it may be possible to pull this off.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks!

Marc Lee

Cross breeding of koi and goldfish does not produce great offspring. THe offspring are generally ugly and they are sterile and can have many defects. Anything that is like a mop is good breeding material my goldfish generally placed the eggs on my hyacinths. Good Luck with your pond and welcome to the board.

Thanks for the info and the welcome.

Well then, I guess my plan makes sense, as I plan to move out most of my goldfish and replace them with more koi. At some point I should be able to breed standard domestic (US) koi for fun and (perhaps) profit. In the mean time, I am buying 4" - 6" koi on sale and feeding them well and giving them plenty of room to grow. I love watching them grow! (I have 3 koi in the 18" - 26" range, and "feeder" goldfish 6" - 9", all with good size all around). Since I never paid more than $15US for a fish and the feeders were about 25 cents (US) a piece, I have turned these things into little monsters!

I have found that koi and goldfish cross breed - did not know it at the time and when we started seeing small, grey or brown fish in our pond we referred to them as "alien fish" and wondered if maybe they were transplanted on some recently purchased pond plants. Found this web site that describes them:

yes! Shocked that is what our "alien fish" look like!!! That is why we are cleaning out pond - separating the Koi and goldfish!

Cool! Thanks. Pictures and article were interesting. Don't think I have any YET, but I too am trying to get the goldfish away from the koi, though I am not sure it will happen very quickly.

A little nervous by the author's comment that he killed everything but the hybrids off with Potassium in his pond. I thought he was the expert!

Guess we can all learn a thing or two, eh?
