Koi and Goldfish Breeding Question

I am new to the forum, and have enjoyed reading the tips on Koi breeding. I agree that it may not be worth a major investment for most of us, especially since I have been very successful in growing koi and goldfish. (If I buy them small and cheap and they grow well, that is most of what I am looking for). I was told to start with feeder goldfish in a new pond to see how they did before adding expensive koi. Of 3 dozen feeders I think I still have 15 or so, 3 or more years later, and they are probably 6-8 inches long, and very full-bodied. The koi I added are now 18 - 24 inches or so (never really measure them) and also quite full-figured (length is not the only measure which counts, and let's not go any further with this line of thought, OK?). FYI, I have never paid more than $15 for a fish (since size increases price, I have significantly added size/value to my fish by caring for them). I understand koi and goldfish can interbreed, and I think I have raised a couple of goldfish which hatched in the pond (and weren't eaten by filters and pumps) as I noticed fish smaller than what I had put in anywhere near that point in time. My question involves the breeding material. I am pleased that a string-type mop head (that is the right type, right?) esp. dark in color is a good material, but always thought goldfish like/require slate rock to place their eggs (though again, I am pretty sure I hatched a couple of g.f. and don't have any slate in the pond). Will the mop work for both? It would be nice to have a few real babies grow in the pond or various tanks (I have a large indoor and a small indoor and the fairly large outdoor tank now up and running). Pumps and filters will be a problem, but thinking maybe if I can watch for eggs and then protect them from the inlets or reduce pumping for a week or so, it may be possible to pull this off. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks! Marc Lee
