Koi fry. Can't Post

Hello, about 4 weeks ago i had some pond weed off my next door neighbour for my new pond (2 months old). My neighour keeps koi and they must have just spawned before he gave us the weed because i now have koi fry. They are now about 1 week old (only noticed them for the past week) and are about 0.7cm long. I had about 30 in the beginning but am now down to 10, i have 5 in a jam jar in the house and 5 outside in the pond. I am feeding them baby brine shrimp.

I have also just got my first fish for my pond which are 3 goldfish and 2 shubunkins (7-10cm long).

Am i doing all the right things or are there any suggestions please, that would be most helpful.

Thank you.

Hi,
Watch out for those new comer or they will eat those 5 little ones.make sure that you have an air stone in in a jar, they need oxygen (small airstone)

good luck

Thank you very much for your advice. I have now moved the fry from the jar into a 4 litre tank and i will look into getting an air stone, i change the water regulary though.

The 5 fry are still in my pond even with the new fish after 4 days now so hopefully they should be ok. I didn't want to take all the fry indoors as i didn't want them to get used to the heat then when they go back outside they will not be used to it.

Thank you.

how deep is your pond? if it is not deep enough, the fry will die in the winter. the first winter is always their hardest!

The pond is about 3 feet deep and is 1500 litres. The fry indoors are about 1cm now and they love that brine shrimp. The fry outside are very hard to find but are a similar size.

Is the pond deep enough and with a large enough capacity?

The goldfish and shubunkins are doing fine in the pond outside.

Thank you.

im no expert, but i think there is a chance the fry outside will die, because of the cold. ideally the depth sould be of at least 4foot. just remember that for every foot deeper the pond will be 1C warmer at the bottom

There is allways a chance that the koi will die or won't die though. The fry have all summer to grow and as long as they survive their first winter they should be ok.

I don't know about the depth though, anywhere between 3-4 feet sounds fine to me.

Thanks for your help.

yes once they survive their first winter they should be ok.

but personally, being over here in the UK, i would over winter them in a shed or garage. or perhaps even a aquarium.

but this is just based on my ideas and experiences.

Re: [Chris_Koi] Koi fry. [In reply to] Can't Post

I am in the UK as well in Birmingham.

That sounds like a good idea, i might put them in the pond when they are big enough for the summer and then have them in the garage over the winter or possibly inside. I want them to become quite hardy though so maybe putting them inside will take that away from them.

I'm looking to get some tench, ghost carp, golden orfe and larger koi to go with my fry when they are bigger and my goldfish and shubunkins. I have been told that tench are doctor fish and will heal sick fish. I have also looked at sturgeon but they are expensive and i have read that they are easy prey for cats.

I am a keen fisherman and love fish. I have had goldfish for a while in the house and have recently built the pond so i am just starting out in the world of ponds.

Thank you.

they will all ready be pretty hardy, because they have been bred over here, it all depends on their first winter, its the most important for them.

i have koi, ghost koi, mirror carp, tench and sturgeon. sturgeon do make a easy target for cats (as i found out about a year ago) but the y learnt after that, that they should not swim too near the top lol

I really want some mirror carp, do you know where you can get them from or where you got yours from?

How big is your pond and how many fish do you have?

Thanx.

I live in Birmingham.

My pond is 1500 litres and it was dug with a small JCB. We were landscaping the garden at the time so we just dug the pond while we had it. It took 2 minutes!!!

My fry indoors are doing really well, they are just about over 1cm now. I read somewhere that they will be about 2 inches after 2 months?

I haven't seen any fry outside for 2 days now, they might just be hiding but i still have the fry inside.

Thanx.

are you kidding the fry will survive, well better chance with a 3 foot pond. try putting a 100 gallon aquarium heater in it. that will help, no?

Re: [khaku2] Koi fry. [In reply to] Can't Post

hi

it is a myth that depth creates warmer water, what is true is that the deeper the water, the longer it takes for temperature changes to occur, so those long, cold winter nights wont 'super' cool the deepest parts, only the surface.

an aquarium heater will not heat a pond, the guide lines for aquariums is 100W per 100L, so a 1500 gallons pond would need 68 aquarium heaters!

I now have 8 koi fry in my tank inside due to 1 passing away.

4 of them are 2 cm and 4 are 1 cm.

I hope to release them into my pond this summer when they are about 5 cm as there are no fish big enough to eat them.

I have 13 fish in my pond at the moment, these include: 2 butterfly ghost koi, 1 blue orfe, 1 golden orfe, 1 golden tench, 1 green tench, 3 goldfish, 3 shubunkins, 1 yellow comet. They range from 5 cm - 10 cm.
