Koi fry - need information? Can't Post

Please can someone describe what a koi fry looks like or even show me a picture. I believe that my koi have spawned but i am still a little unsure. i have little silver/black things swimming around my pond. My larger koi are eating them. It would be a great help if someone could show me a detailed picture of koi fry and also if possible koi eggs. Thanks,Wink

Try this http://www.koi.com.my/cgi-bin/koiforum/gforum.cgi?post=55761;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread

I think they are few days old. If you think yours are frys, Take them out and separate themSmile or else there will be nothing left for you to enjoy.Unsure

My fry was brought up by nature. Did not separate them coz I was still novice then and still noviceTongue You can buy fry powder. But I can't recommend how many times per day or how much. Do a search in this section. There was a topic not long ago regarding fry food.

If you seperate them ,hatch off some brine shrimp for them, its live food and very good for them and they will eat it good for you. Go by the direction and get you a good size container of eggs as you will need them. You can get a small thing of them at the pet stores but I think you may have to order larger containers.

Good luck with the frySmile

Re: [parkend] Koi fry - need information? [In reply to] Can't Post

I am a newbie myself, but having just put in a 2,000 gal pond and immediately going though a successful spawn I can tell you what we experienced. When we observed the eggs being laid and fertilized (what a fun show that was) we seperated the plants, rocks, etc. the majority of them were laid in to a small (50 gallon) hatchery where several hundred hatched in a few days. We gave them special liquifry, brine shrimp, and kept the water refreshed from the same pond the other fish were in. A few weeks later we discovered that some of the fry had also hatched in the big pond where the eggs had been laid in the first place and much to our surprize they were growing on their own at least 4 times faster than the ones we were pampering with special food and accomodations. As the ones we were babying grew to 3/4 in or more we began moving them to the main pond with their parents and larger siblings with nothing but a screen to keep them from being eaten and their growth rate immediately exploded. They are now almost 3 months old and range in size from 1.5 - 4 inches with great color variety. I think the next time we have a spawn we will just move the eggs to a place where we can put a screen in place and let nature do the rest.

I almost forgot to mention the problem with tobies. We were warned by friends about them gobbling up their brethren, so we seperated them into smaller catchpools along the 50 foot stream that feeds the pond until the smaller ones had grown beyond becoming sibing sushi.
