Koi or Goldfish? Can't Post

Hello,

We have a new approx. 4,000 gallon pond we installed about a month ago in my back yard. About a week after install, we threw in two small (2.5-3 inch) Koi just to see how it went... (I know, I know...). A few days later we were in the throws of the expected new pond algae bloom, and for the past month haven't seen any sign of fish. Well, the last few days the water has started to clear slightly and we can see down about 6-8 inches depending. I promise I'm getting to the point... Smile

Yesterday while watching for signs of life I saw more than I expected... little fishies!!! We counted at least 6, all about 1.5 inches long, most of them red/black/white and one white/red.

My question is, do you think these could be Koi? I know we only had two Koi fish in there, but I have a bunch of plants in there that came from a friend's pond that could have had Goldfish eggs in them, as she keeps Koi and Goldfish. The plants sat in a tub for a few weeks, but I don't know how long it takes eggs to hatch. Is there any way to tell if the fish are Koi or Goldfish? They couldn't be anymore than a month old because there has only been water in the pond for a month. They look like they are thriving, feasting on algae. The bloom was probably a good thing as it helped keep them safe from predators. They sure are cute little buggers... :-)

Incidently, we spotted our two little Koi (named Neil and Buzz... after the astronauts... you know... first fish in the pond... umm, nevermind) yesterday too. Amazing how you can go a whole month seeing nothing, see nothing the day before, and then see everything a day later. They are BIG!! In only a month they've grown to almost 6 inches. Wow! I'm going to be afraid to wade in there now for fear of losing a toe! Wink

Anyway, as for the babies, thanks for any advice you can give on identifying these guys!

Hi,
Koi have 2 pairs of barbels (whiskers) , although you may not be able to see them if the fish are so small.

Hello,

I had the same experince as you. I had some pond weed from a friends pond and 1 week later i had koi fry (he only keeps koi).

If i had known there were eggs in the weed i would of kept more of it. I have 8 koi fry and they are between 1cm and 2cm.

My koi fry look silvery.

Hopw it helps.

Thanks for the responses!

They babies are growing quickly, but still too small to see barbels, if they are even there. Now that the water is totally clear (added a UV), I think we have several different "litters" (sorry, I don't know what you call them for fish) of babies. We have a group that is silver with a sort of blush undertone, a few that look like shubunkin goldfish, a few that are long and slim with pale orange creamsicle coloring, and some that defy any sort of description I could give. I spotted one yesterday that looked to be orange and black marble. An unfortunate looking little guy, I'm hoping he's just a goldfish in transition. Wink

Don't know what these kids are, but we'll keep them until we know for sure. I'd planned on only having Koi... Guess they had other ideas!
