Lots of Fry, I mean lots Can't Post

I have lots and lots of fry in a 300 gallon tank. Hard to tell how many, but there are alot. I know that I have to change the water alot, because the natural pheronones (however that is spelled) can cause the fish not to grow. I was wondering if, since I have about 2,000 maybe 3,000 or more, in this tank. I was hoping they would grow so I cull them out, should I remove half of them anyway into another 300 gallon tank? Or can this many koi fry actually grow so we could eventually cull them out?Unsure

Also I am feeding them 4 times a day. Did a partial water change yesterday and did another larger water change today. Should I change the water once a week or is that too much, or too little?

Well one spawn was a controlled spawn. Two white doitsu, fantail. Beautiful males with one Kohaku female a real beauty. The other spawn happened in the main pond. With an unusual Matsuba. It is unusual because it has an almost bull nose, is the only way to describe this fish. Not as pointy as other kois. The pond guy that imports from Japan every year, White Path, in Dahlonaga, he is great. Well he told us that this is an unusual fish. He mentioned last year that he wished it was a female. Well she is a female and involved in this spawn, was another white fantail and a shushui fantail. Also a ginrin, solid white got involved. Three hours later, I was so so tired, I needed a nap. It was the most amazing thing I had seen.

So any help in regards to the amount of fry in a 300 gallon, how many water changes per week for the QT??? Also 4 times a day feeding is that enough???
Nitrites and trates 0
PH have to raise it, 7.0
Ammonia 0
Have to check the KH GH

Thanks for any help, LyndaPirate

Hi Lynda,

I can imagine your excitement. My spawned last year and i only kept 5 of them. They are now about 6 inches . Right now you may have to add anti fugus solution in your tank to protect the fry. If the water condition is ok then release the frequncy of water change. My pond was too filled with fry and eventually when they grew to about 3 to 4 inches we counted about 700. ( We counted them as we gave them away ).
My was in my main pond and we partitioned the pond with mosuito netting and they feed on the algae on the pond wall and therefore i have will not know how many times to feed them. 2 months later we fed them with paste food and that the time yu will really enjoy watching they eat.

Re: [Robert Lee] Lots of Fry, I mean lots [In reply to] Can't Post

Well we definitely have more than 700. I wanted to cull them out soon. We thought the algae would be okay for them, as they would eat the algae or whatever attachs to the algae.
Where did you get the paste food?? Or did you make it?? I plan on only keeping a few. Others that look good I might give away. Guess I will have to wait until they are larger to cull them out.
What kind of anti fungus did you get?? Also where did you find that product.

Thanks Lynda

Hi Lynda,

The anti fungus solution is called Malachete Green( Spelling could be wrong ) from Interpet and the paste food is from Izaki. From my experience it may 3 months before you can cull them.
Both item I am sure be obtained from your local fish shops.
I am very sure there will be outstanding ones.

Hi Robert
Thanks for the info. I am going to try to find these products. I know about Malachite Green. Didn't think I needed it for the fry. Since you told me about it, I actually think I might have some around here, somewhere. They will be very interesting to say the least. I hope I get some doistu fantail.

Thanks again,

Lynda

Hi Lynda,

The malachite green is actually to protect the fry from fungus generated by the unhatch eggs.

Eastern time. I had wondered about all the unhatched eggs. We are past that part. We have changed the water several times. Water seems fine. What time zone are you??? GMT. I am in Georgia near NC. Where are you located???

Thanks for your help, Lynda

Hi Lynda

If the unhatched eggs are drained then the situation is better.
I am located in Brunei Darussalam ( On the Borneo Island ) our time zone is GMT +7 (+8)
From the way you are writing situation seem to be under control keep it that way.
Another way of feeding the fry is to boil egg ( Hard boil ) and feed them with the egg york but that will cloud the water a little and remove the uneaten one after 1/2 day.
What I did was I put some palstic flower in the middle so that the fry can cling to them.

Re: [Robert Lee] Lots of Fry, I mean lots [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Robert

The fry are growing. I have water hyacinths with long roots so the fry have places to hide and the food gets attached to the roots. Also algae is on the sides of the tank and the roots of the hyacinths. I had heard of hard boiled egg yokes. I have also heard that it really messes up your water. I am still feeding them 4x a day, with ground up koi food, flakes and krill. So I gather from what you said, if I try egg yolks I have to fish it out after 1/2 day. I guess I can try that. I just wish these fry will grow faster so I can cull them. I have thousands. Well you must live in a very interesting place. I never heard of your area. I might look it up and see where you actually are.

Hi Lynda,

If they are feeding well with the present feed then keep it that way, yes egg york can mess the water, but as a source of protien for the fry it is good.
Well Brunei is a small and oil rich country with a population of only 340,000.
I suppose the culling part has to wait until they are about 4 inches or whenever you can tell the color pattern.

Hi Robert

Sure wish they would grow faster, so I could cull some of them out. I know have to wait until I can see what their colors are. I might try egg yolk and see if they eat it.

I am in the North Georgia Mountains USA. Very cool here, lots of mountains, trees, lakes and rivers. Everyone around here have boats, well almost everyone. Lots of fishing going on around here in spring and summer. Thanks for the info.

Robert,
I am sure it was wonderful looking at their koi. I bet their prices are huge. I think imported koi are highly overrated. One can find great koi locally.

I will have to post more pictures of my koi. I will post soon. Lynda

Hi Richard,
We did a water change the other day. Had to. We lost a great number of fry. We still have more. So I guess we did a cull without even looking at the fry. We needed to get rid of some anyway. We lost some of our larger fry, the Tobies or Shooters as they are called. That's okay as they usually aren't the nicer koi. We still have lots and ordered a new filter for the fry pond. So we won't have to change the water as much, I hope. Everything else is okay around here. Been in the yard working and working on orders that we have for our woodworking. I want to buy a huge boat and just go out in the water, with no phone, no koi, no dogs, etc. LOL. What a vacation that would be.

Take care and glad you sent me a message. Haven't been on computer to check things out. I have to just sit down and relax.

Hope your family is doing well.
Lynda

Hi Lynda,

This happen to us when our koi spawned last year. We were told that of all the eggs, 50% will hatch and only 5% will live through. This morning our koi spawn again and it is hard for us to collect the eggs we can only collect those that are suck by pumps into the fileration tank. We will keep you posted.
BTW thanks the family is well and hope yours too.
God bless

Hi again
Hopefully you will have some great eggs and most will hatch. We lost most of the ones that grew larger faster than the others. There is still alot out there. We had thought we needed to do a massive water change, I wonder if that is what did it?? Anyway, good luck with your fry.

Family is fine. I am tired of having a house. Told Al (Husband) that we should just sell it all, get a huge boat and live on it. My dream since I was a child. I think that would be incredible. Well as I said the family is doing great, if only we can get things finished around here.

Any progress reports on the babies??? We've had 2 spawns one month apart during the last 5 weeks. I'll start another thread with pictures of some of ours, but I was wondering how yours were considering the large number in such a small space.

Hi there
Still lots of fry. They are growing. We have lost some, when we do water changes and when it rained some floated out and on the ground. We just have alot more. They are growing, some alot faster than others. I do alot of water changes at least once a week, but thinking on doing more, maybe two a week or even three. Have to keep that P...'s down. I also added two sponge filters. We have lost some of the larger ones, the Tobies or Shooters as one guy called them. They have been growing rather slowly. I also thought of just, without knowing if they are disfigured, disposing of the black ones. I have been waiting on doing that. They definitely are larger than in the beginning.

So do you think I should dispose of at least the solid black looking fry?? I do have some, well two I saw that are about 1 or maybe 1 1/2" long.

Thanks for asking, Lynda

Re: [femme_artist51] Lots of Fry, I mean lots [In reply to] Can't Post

There will always be some losses as Koi fry have a high mortality rate due to birth defects (too much inbreeding for too many generations). I would suggest more water exchanges to keep ammonia levels under control as ammonia and nitrite will cause a lot of losses as well.
As far as culling goes, if you still have the fry from the individual spawns separated I would cull each batch for type. Pick the ones from each spawn you expect to get from the parent sets, and remove anything that doesn't fit. (not what you dream about, but what the parents tell you the offspring SHOULD be). There will always be atypical fry in a pairing, even with a Kohaku to Kohaku spawn you will get benigoi, Kigoi, Chagoi, and some dark Utsuri/Showa types. They are rarely good enough to keep and grow out.

Larz, thanks for the reply. I guess I will remove alot of those black ones. Keep the lighter ones. Also I will increase the water changes to every other day. I hope that helps. The water always tested okay. Been feeding them at least 4 times a day, and they are up eating well. Also have the sponge filter, actually two that filter 1,000 gallons each. I have the fry in a 300 gallon tank. So I guess that is good filtration. Still lots of koi even though I lost some.

Take care and thanks for the info.

Hi Lynda & Al

Nice to read that your fry are doing well.
I have more or less five fry left. I put them in our guppy tank and i forgot to reset the pump position and they were taken by the pumps.
I agree with Larz comments and that was what actually happen to us last year when our koi spawn and eventually we had a hard time giving them away.

Hey Robert Lee

I am afraid I will have the same problem, giving any away. I bet if I get some Doitsu fantails they will go fast. The male was a solid white fantail. I thought he was too young to do his thing. He was thin when I got him. The guy we got him from have lots of fish imported from Asia. This one has his fantail split in travel, too thin for him to sell. This fish was the most aggressive in the spawning process. So who knows what we will get. I will keep everyone posted. Thanks Lynda

We had pretty good luck adopting out the majority of ours last time around using the Koi adoption section of this forum and listing some with www.FreeCycle.com . This time it isn't an issue with ours as anything we don't want to keep is going to a friends farmhouse pond. No fish in it and he wants some colorCool
