Hi Lynda,

To my surprise yesterday when I was trying to clean my tank that I put 3 pieces of Japanese Matt and found 23 fry that are about 1'' long. I thought I had lost all from this spawn. So there is still hope to see some from this spawn.

WinkWink
INSTEAD OF CULLING THEM .... TRY RELEASING THOSE FRYs INTO OUR LAKES , PONDS AND OLD MINING PONDS.
WE HAVE MANY PIBLIC LAKES AROUND . SHARE THOSE KOIS WITH THE PUBLIC.

Re: [kelwts] Lots of Fry, I mean lots [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi everyone,
I haven't posted in awhile. Been busy building a new addition to our existing pond. We now have an upper pond (original one) and that flows down into the newer larger section.

Our fry did continue to cull themselves out. We took all the black or dark looking koi and threw them into the mud pond. Wanted to see what developed with those. Also the frogs have to eat don't they. We had decided not to throw the 200 approximate koi that are left. We had mated the Matsuba and the Doitsu fantail. We seem to have some interesting Matsuba, kind of grey and white. Also have lots of white fantail, some all white, some with yellow heads. We have a few from the other female that had also laid eggs. She was a kohaku with two fantails, more yellow in color than white. They gave us some great colors, lots of yellow fantails. Seems we have a lot of fantails, which I am happy about.

We decided that they needed to be moved from the larger square pond we built. So we put them in the older inground pond. We put a screen so the young koi wouldn't float over the flat rock waterfall into the bottom pond. Well the screen fell down and lots of young koi did float down to the new pond. The larger koi are leaving them alone, so we sure hope they continue to do that. These young koi are 3-4 inches. Do you think the larger koi will eat them?? Hope not, our koi are well fed.

We will have some great looking koi next spring. Hope we sell them.

Lynda

Hi Lynda,

Nice to have back in this forum. Koi at the size of 3'' to 4'' is safe with grown ones. This is from my pass experience. I too put all the 12 I have from the last spawn into the main pond.
Some pictures of your new pond and kois would be nice.

Best regards

What we have observed is that once Koi reach sexual maturity they will not eat koi fry. Juveniles on the other hand do. I think it has to do with the hormonal trigger for survival of the species. This is only based on observation in our own spawnings, so take it for what it's worth.
Try to get some pictures if you can. Ours are 3 and 4 months old now and sizes range from 3"-6".

Hi asvin,

Best is after may be 4 or 5 days after they were hatched. This is my own experience. But put small amount. the egg yolk can really mess up the water.

Best regards & Good luck

Robert Lee.

Hi Robert Lee and Larz [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Gang, Havent been on lately. How are you doing? We are doing fine. Al has been real busy with our woodworking business and hasnt had much time for anything else Ha Ha . Our koi are doing fine. We had a big loss last year when we went on vacation to Fla. a Bear came to dinner and ate all our big breeding stock and damaged our bigger new pond liner. Al had to fix that. Since then our son has put bass and crappie in the new pond . Iwas wondering if koi will be ok with the bass??? We thought of putting the larger koi in there. So the bass wont eat them as bait LOL especially if the koi are the same size as the bass and crappie???

We have some 1 year old koi now. We had only kept about 10 of them. Some nice ki matsuba fantails. Have a mean looking face. Have some white fantail and some yellow.

We are getting some bigger koi, she calls them jumbo koi. They will be for breeding, as we lost most of our other koi last winter. I was so upset about that bear, I couldn't even go to the pond for months. I was so heart broken. That is why we had needed to know about the bass, crappie and koi. Anyway thanks for any advice.

Robert Lee, how is your family and your fish family?? Larz how is your fish family?? Lynda and Al

Re: [femme_artist51] Hi Robert Lee and Larz [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Lynda & Al & Larz.

It has been a while and thanks the family is fine. With regards to bass, crappie with koi I am not sure but will check it out. I have grappies and angel fishes with them for years and co exsisted well. I have since enlarged my pond. It is now a near 40 ton pond.
I had a hard time with the water control ( green ) in the beginning but refused to use UV. Eventually got it resolved and the water cleared up. As my pond is in the open with netting over to reduce sunlight and when come raining season like now they still turn green and after a week the water clears up again.
Since begining of this year I had let our son Adrian & his wife run our air conditioning business. I come in to the office in the morning and afternoon i work on the pond.

Best regards

Robert Lee

Re: [Robert Lee] Hi Robert Lee and Larz [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Robert Lee
Seems you have been busy. I appreciate your looking into my question. Wow nice big pond. We are thinking of lining our mud pond and finally finishing the bottom pond. We did some changes, but still working on it. Always a project. I also refuse to use a UV light. We use a bog. Down from the filter that we made, with filter material into a spillway and into the bog then to the pond. The flowing over a large flat rock to the bottom pond then up through an other filter back into the middle pond. Wow uh.
We lost some of big koi, well most of them last fall, when a bear came and had dinner on us. We saw the rake marks from his claws on the liner. He ate to his hearts content and what he didn't eat the water drained out and killed the others. We have lots of those babies though and they are growing. Some have this black that runs from their eyes to the top of their head, two of them, they look down right mean. We are going on Thursday to get some free koi, some of them are jumbo koi. Wow I can't wait. Will be a wet time getting them from the pond. Hope Al is up to it. He was sick all day, but still worked on the pond.

We are semi retired ourselves. We just have orders for some furniture. Just did get another one for a bench we do. We show them in a store, an antique store. Also we have our site, www.boogerholloworginal.etsy.com We have some of our furniture on that site. Well got to run I guess. Worked myself moving rocks and things. I can work on a chain gang now, I have moved so many rocks in all these years. Take care, enjoy your semi retirement. Lynda
