Moving Fry Can't Post

My koi have not spawned yet this year. I am in the process of building a new pond in an attempt to be able to get more fry to survive. In the past years I have had to keep them in a kiddie pool and there isn't enough room for many fry to survive. How soon can fry be moved after they hatch? Are they sensitive to change in water conditions? My thought was to have the fish spawn again in the kiddie pool and then move the fry to the new pond after they have hatched. I have tried homemade spawning ropes in the past couple years and most of the eggs still end up on the bottom and side of the kiddie pool.

Last year I had the best luck I have had so far and got 70 fry to survive. Unfortunately some of them got sick in the tank and died, but I have still have 54 waiting for the weather to get warm and I am going to put them back out to grow for the summer.

I would appreciate any help that anyone could give me.

Thanks,

Joel

Re: [jmaybe] Moving Fry [In reply to] Can't Post

I have got my goldfish to spawn, here are a few pointers:

* Fry are sensitive to temperature and water parameter changes in their first several weeks of life. Therefore you should ensure that the PH and temperature of the ponds you are moving them to are close to their original home as possible.

* I prefer to move them when they are in the egg phase of life, but if you want to move them after they have hatched do so with a container, moving in to container the fry in with the water. I never use a net because the fry are delicate.

* Having large quantities of fry will lead to a rise in ammonia and nitrite. You're best bet is to have several large sponge filters made or bought for use inside the fry tank(s). A gentle returning water flow is best to prevent too much damage to the fry. Microscopic animals (which they can see, and I have witness my fry eat) often live within these sponges and are a great treat for the fry.

* Make sure the sponge filters were already operating in another pond for several weeks before the addition of it into the fry tank. This will make sure you have a cycled filter ready for use ASAP.

* Depending on temperature you'll need to ensure there is enough oxygen in the water, so use an airstone that gently aerates the water.

* Have water plants in the fry tank, which could preferably be already covered in bits of algae from an existing tank or pond. This way the fry can feed on microscopic foods available here.

* If you are putting the fry to grow out, make sure they are large enough (say 3-4cms) before they go outside to a pond just in case there are other predators lurking in the pond that will want to eat them.

Aquaman

Re: [koiguyoz] Moving Fry [In reply to] Can't Post

Just some questions so I can plan ahead :)

Although I don't have a pond yet I have already thought about breeding. I will have a two ponds connected by a small stream. The top pond will be about 4x5-6 and 2 feet deep and wont have koi (only plants) but I was thinking I could move fry/eggs to it although I worry about there being too much water movement in that pond.

My boyfriend has a 75 gallon fish tank in working order, there are 2 gouramis (about 2 inches each) a pleco (3 inches) in there now. I could put a separator in there quite easily, or just move the other fish to another tank.

Could I hatch the fry in the tank? If so how long should I keep them in there? I'm sure they could go in the top pond if they can swim then they wont be eaten by the other koi. Will the fry eat the plants in the top pond?

How long until they can be moved to the bottom pond with the other koi? Which will be approx 8x7x3?

Dear Jamie142

You might be better off getting yourself a quarintine tank to raise your baby koi. Or building yourself a tempary pond.

A small tropical tank will not be big enough as kio are mature after about 3 years and 500 grams or more, they produce about 2000 eggs per kilo and spawn enmass.

i'll put you up the link i used last year.

You said that alot of fry will cause the ammonia and nitrites or was it nitrates to rise. Well it's been over a week without a water change. The water perimeters where fine before we change the water out in the QT. We haven't had a problem with any ammonia or nitrites. Only with lower PH. 7.0. So we left it 7.0. I wanted to know why our water hasn't changed much at all. I will check it again tomorrow. Hope to find it hasn't changed much. I am feeded them ground up koi pellets and flakes, with ground up krill. Bye the way we have lots of fry. I mean lots of them still swimming for 3 weeks now. Lynda

I must have quoted for ridiculous amounts of fry hehe, possibly in the thousands or tens of thousands.

It's good to hear your fry are doing well :) I look forward to your success :).

well I thought possibly something was wrong. I am going to check the water today, to be sure. Also we have to do a water change. We have thousands of fry. That is for sure. Lynda
