My Koi Fry Can't Post

Recently I acquired some koi fry from a member of AKA (Australian Koi Association). He was very kind and gave me a bag. Parents is a 21year old female Yamabuki Ogon (G/Champ of 1994 AKA show) and father is a Platnium Ogon. Some fry have already got some yellow on them and some are already very shiny. The fry are around 3weeks old now and I cant wait to see them colour up. So far I only have them in a extra high 2ft tank, but once bigger they will be transferred to a 4X2X2 before the pond. I only have about 100 or so fry, so it will be a help for starting me off. Here are some pics I took today:

Neet Mango'

Now you need to really get a big pond going if you are going to raise these fry they will require a lot of room

Hey Mango, get you a 1000 gallon kiddie pool and clean very good with mild soap and water and fill with water and put in a couple of scoops of micerical grow ferterlizer and let the water turn good and green and put the fry in that so they will grow better, the green water will supply them with some live foods and will give them a good start.

On that point Judy, would you recommend:

(a)A water depth of no more than 30cms high (since the fry can't stand water pressure higher than that)?
(b)A gentle large sponge filter (already cycled), to reduce the effects of nitrate and ammonia.
(c) Aeration through the use of an air pump and air stone to reduce the effects of oxygen starvation as the algal bloom could produce carbon dioxide at night?

I'm still an amateur breederSmile and would appreciate the input of people with experience :D

Sounds good to meWink 3 ft deep or 4 ft deep is good and as long as you have a algie bloom no worrys about ammonia build up. If you have establish filteration your doing goodSly

A little trick I used to take care of oxygen and help with filtration without a pump. I put a small airstone in the bottom of a plastic flower pot (with holes in the bottom) and filled it with established biomedia. With the airstone bubbling it aerates the bio and water while creating a gentle water circulation through the media without having to worry about a pump sucking fry in by accidentUnsure. Works pretty goodWink.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. Once the weather is stable, im going to build a 6m (long) X 4m (wide) X 2m (high) pond in my backyard. Once the try are a big larger in size, im going so cull the demented ones and place them in 4X2X2 tanks. Once they are bout I say 5-10cm, they are going in the pond. What do you guys think?

(a) How deep will your proposed pond be? As you'll know by know, without a deep enough pond most of us koi keepers face the evil birds of prey who turn our friends into their lunch. I recommend one metre deeper or so for pond depth. As a keeper of a few yamabuki, they have a tendency to grow very very large in a short period of time (I've got one that went from 6 to 12 inches in over 1.5 years).
(b) I think you mean "deformed" koi, as 'demented' means 'crazy' Tongue

The proposed pond im thinking atleast 1.5m deep, but if works out, im making it 2m deep. 1m underground and the other 1m above :D

Kskoi...

I don't think you need to be extra anxious....once you got the breeding tanks ready with plenty of air.....when ever the parent koi are ready........you can get the show going....Wink
Don't forget the spawning material for the eggs.... I know a friend that used a used mop for the eggs to stick to!!
Very tragic that time, he made a bad choice.....Unsure

With regards, Jarvis
