HI,

Just wondering at what age will koi spawn for the first time?

How often do they "do it"LaughLaughLaugh after the first time?

If they mature enough physically the females will produce eggs in their nisai year, but they will be small and fewer in number. Most breeders prefer to hold them off until they are larger as they produce better, larger eggs in greater numbers. As to how long they keep spawning??? I really don't know. Koi are long lived in ideal waters so it is possible the females can spawn for many years. Unfortunately, in captivity conditions are less than ideal even under professional care and older females tend to have a higher mortality rate.

Yes it could take a couple of years for the fish to mature unlike goldfish that seem able to bread within a year.. Given a good diet and the weather being ok IE warm enough and light enough for long enough they can reproduce upto 3 times a year.
Males mature faster than females. Sometimes you can visualy see when males are sexualy mature or in breading condition as they develope tubicles on the gill plates and the front rays of the pectorial fins.

If they are in good condition then i don't see any reason why they would stop.

How you mentioned that they apawn up to 3 times a year.....when do they occur?

are they all in spring and summer?

Dear s_clan

Mostly yes, depending on the weather and such. Last year i had a spawning at the end of April then the second at the end of July beginng of Aughust and a third in the beginng of November, as it was still warm.
Sayin that though i haven't had a spawning yet this year but we did have a long winter here. But they are starting to get frisky.Blush

Wow....I've just not heard of multiple spawns in a year....Smile

BTW: what is the water temperture of your pond now?

At this moment ... and it's 10:30 pm it's 54 dergees F
thats just over 12 degrees C
still a little chilli for them i spose , and me but next week they will have some company ...... me

i bet they get fedders with me in their envoiroment i can hear them saying bloody mammals .....Angelic

My water temp is about a little over 15 C and the koi gotten fatter since I started feeding them in early spring...LaughCool
