Our koi spawned ! Can't Post

Smile Wow! 15 mins after putting our koi into our 3000 gallon pond. Our pond was running for 3 weeks with 2 streams and trickel tower. so this Saturday, baby fry will be 3 weeks old, I took plants out of Pond that were covered with eggs and put into 55 gallon tank. used same water from pond to keep temperature the same. I then put reticulated foam over filter tubes to keep eggs and fry from getting sucked in and let it run. Every morning checked for Dragonfly larvae, catch them and get them out of tank they attack baby fry bye by puncturing air bladder and then walk away, leaving them to die. feed Daphne, dried flake crushed, koi food crushed. most important thing keep bottom of tank clean, and use Maroxy it kills fungal infections use this right away when you place plants or (medium - whatever you used to have koi lay eggs on)in tank it will kill the fungicide before it kills the eggs use for up to 4 days after fish have spawned. We did not expect to have baby koiShocked this fast so a learning experiance we already have colors showing our female is a Hi Utsuri from Shinoda and the boys are from him also, she is 4 yrs old and both boys are 2 yrs old 1 is a gin rin Hi Utsuri and the other Hi Utsuri,we also had a Shiro Bekko in pond He started the whole thing going!Cool We can see color ,some are white with black and orange and some yellows almost an inch long.very happy and excited about babies have over 60 what we can count they swim very fast. anyone have questions will glady respond to you.

I am new to this whole koi thing and I am the researcher for my family on the fishes health, food, and supplies etc. I would like to see your pond and the fry I have never seen one and I know my family with love to see a picture. Also do you think you could post a picture of the parenting koi or the ones you think helped make the fry.

Thanks, KoiOwner

I you're just interested in seeing pictures of Koi Eggs, Frys and the Parents ... I think I can help here.

Let's see if I can remember how to post pictures. The first one will be a picture of how koi eggs look like right after breeding. The next few pictures will be the frys from one of our members (Efren Gabrielle) who bred his fish. Some pictures taken a few days after they hatched, followed by pictures as they continued to grow.. and finally a couple of the parents. Enjoy.

I like your little fry, Bran! I hope you can get your pictures up soon likdaor I want to see your fry! By the way, Bran, is there any reason you put the coins in the water? Were they just for comparison to the size of the fry?

That wasn't me! That was Efren Gabrielle and yes that was done to give you an idea of how small the phisys were! Someone should tell him that Copper isn't good for phish! Not even itsy bitsy ones!

Gold coins would be better!

He bred his fish manually (artificial insemination (sp?)). He took the female out (cause he didn't want the males to chase it around .. Didn't want them to get tired! (LOL!). Hmmm, why didn't someone help me out like that when I was chasing women?Unsure .. squeezed the eggs out. Then he took the male(s) out and squirted the sperm on the eggs!Blush

Pretty Brave Dude I would say!

Of course both the female and the males are now "Flatter than a piece of Pancakes!" ShockedShockedPiratePirateSlySly

Do the male spawn during the spawning or after the female has laid her eggs.

Re: [johan1011] Our koi spawned ! [In reply to] Can't Post

They spawn at same time. The male will swim along side the female and nudge her body into plants that are in the pond. they will swim around slow then fast what we have seen.they have spawnd 3 times each time at different times of day. Remember to remove any sharp objects(rocks) in pond,as the male will slam the female into side walls, this is how he gets the eggs out of her. as he does this he goes along and fertilizes the eggs. After spawning you will smell this funny odor like rotten eggs that means they spawned,if you weren't there to witness the event.

We separated the female from males afterward and put her in private tank to let her rest. Good Luck,Likdaor

Re: [johan1011] Our koi spawned ! [In reply to] Can't Post

CongratulationsCool I'm oing to try spawning brushes next year, ours spawned on plants in pond. You will not know if they are fertilized until about 3-4 days .Then you will see clear eggs with 2 black dots those are the eyes. I took a magnifying glass to Aquarium so I could see the whole procedure. I took 5 potted plants from pond and put in a 55 gallon Aquarium.

Depending on whichKoi one has the stronger gene pool difficult to say,I'm no Expert on Geneology.

but inour first Spawning of our Hi Utsuri Female and our 1 Hi Utsuri Male and our 1 Shiro Bekko male we have 12 Variety's in the 75 babys we had,all are doing well with color & patterns they just get better every day. I would not worry what your going to have, all will not make it thru the early stage. It's nature ,just enjoy the process. PS. use Maroxy-medication it's for Fungal infections which will attack the eggs, you use it for not more then five days, if you notice eggs getting white looking like cotten balls they got fungas ,put in and it will kill the fungus.and the eggs that where white will also make it.it will not harm the eggs.there are other Medications if you can't find in your area.

Just ask pet store they should have something.Best wishesSlyLikdaor

Dear likdaor.

yes the spawning brushes works really well I will highly recomend it ! after two days the fry were starting to swim around, quite a lot died ,and i really dont now what the problem could be as i feed them some hard boild egg wich i finely mesh with water i constantly let the water running in to the pool ( the pool is not a pool anymore )Sly the size of the pool is 17 x6x1.5 metre and the water is a little bit green now,i really dont know if it could be to less food or a shortage of oxygen !!!

Please help !!

Thanks

Re: [johan1011] Our koi spawned ! [In reply to] Can't Post

You need to have oxygen in pond.with alot of eggs it takes up oxygen.Do not feed with too much egg yoke it polutes the water very fast. I used crushed up koi flakes and sprinkeld them into water, you also need to do some careful water changes everyday.Make sure it is same temperture and you use dechlorinator everytime!

What kind of aeration do you have in pond and how many fish are in pond?

I have found you will lose alot of baby fry because of the water getting polluted real fast. Also baby fry can not see that is why they reccommed you feed large ammounts so that the baby fry run into the food, but that also means you need a good system to keep your water clean.

The bigger your pond the harder it is to makes such big water changes, some say 20% or more per day for 30 days thats alot of water. I did that for a few weeks and had them in a 55 gallon tank,it is not fun moving 20% of water every day.

Also when you have to use Medications,it gets costly when you have to medicate a pond, if you have 0ver 1000 gallons and you have to medicate 5 days in a row that includes your filter not just the pond so the cost is a big one.

For next year I'm working on designing a Spawning tank that will solve all the hard work and solve the problems that you encounter when your fish spawn.

I have enough work don't need to add to my work load.

what kind of filtration does your pond have?

How big is your filter?

Once baby fry hatch a water temp of 76-86 is a temp you want to have them at it helps them develop better & less deformaties.

That is why I brought them in an enviroment where I could control water temperture.

what is your climate like? are you in a warmer zone?

My sugesstion is watch how much you feed, keep water clean,do not bring any kind of nets buckets from any other pond in contact with your pond and you will be fine.

Just think before you do something, never rush, thats when you will make a mistake.if the phone rings-let it ring don't get distracted from what you are doing, never let your hose run unwatched always use pressure nozzel that way you have to be there.have heard to many horror stories of people losing all their koi cause they got a phone call and left water running.

Good luck, let me know how things are going.Likdaor

Dear likdaor

Thanks for your advice,i think i would rather try the koi flakes from now on i have a sprayer in the middel oof the pond i also have a bottom drain ,as i have a clear stream of water running through my yard i use some of that running into my pond and open the bottom drain to change the water i also have a normal swimming pool filter on the pond There are only nine 40-50 cm kois in the pond (150 000 liter)but seperated from the fry I also use some antifungal I have fed the fry with one egg youlk and start to do a water change after that a lot of fry started to die , maybe i gave them to much egg.The temreture around here is about 86.i am also thinking of putting an aerator in the corner to the fry.

I will certainly make use of your help !

Thanks alot,i really appreciate it!!
JM

PS we here in South Africa really need those spawning tanks you are working on,good luck!!!
