So funny...looking at the cute pics, and thought wow...those babies look just like MINE...well they are - last years post. Thought I would post updated pics here....

Koi spawned last week, so have about 1,000 babies....first year, 100 - Second Year - 400 - Hopefully we can get 1,000 this year....Grew out some of mine from Two years ago, the one in the picture that has the red gills - that is Moby - He is about 15" now.........getting some good growth....

Having frys is so much work though, and very stressful, we are better at it this year, but I am writing EVERYTHING DOWN...this year, and they were a month earlier than last year, so it was quite a surprise...we thought we had another month to prepare....

Cant wait to get some good sleep again............

Re: [Koiotic] Pics of Babies [In reply to] Can't Post

Here are the babies from yesterday...Spawning took place day before Fathers day. We were on vacation and my dad came over to feed. He said the pond was trashed - called me - asked him to put in spawining ropes and he salvaged what he could of the parrots feather...He put in willow-left that in overnight- we came home early from our trip, but they seemed to be finished. The next morning I cleaned out the pump and found eggs...so went to work, spent 3 hours netting eggs out, took the willow out and there were quite a few eggs on it, so not sure if they spawned again that night or what.

My dad and I were not very hopeful, would have been surprised to have 100...but they started hatching - there are a few hundred that hatched from the ropes, which he put in at 4:00 in the afternoon - and there are a few hundred from the willow - which was put in around 7:00 at night....very surprised at how many babies we have - and especially from the willow.....

Most frys are free floating at this point - Trying the hard boiled egg this year, also bought hikari first feed, they seem to be going after that stuff...Daphnia and algae we have been adding to the tanks every couple of hours, heaters - air stones and sponge filter all going - 100 gallon stock tank - and 50 gallon preform - The heaters really seem to be my savior this year. I lost all the ones I had outside last year - the ones in the green house were fine. I suspected it was from a cold front that had come in one night, even though it was July it still can get pretty cold at night. That was why I had put heaters in the tank - so glad I did that - the babies are always hanging around those heaters, and they really seem to be keeping the water more consistent.

Any suggestions would be great, like I said this is the third year, but I still feel like an extreme beginner........

Woops, just realized this did not post............They are doing great though! Last night I fed them a combo of brine shrimp and First feed...from Hikari...they were grazing away!

I put one of my two year old babies in my large pond last night, she was almost 10"....not to bad, put a couple small ones in a 4" and 5" one year olds in, I hope that was not a mistake, the 4" one was like one of those skipping rocks...it was freaking out, I thought they would do well as they were in with (2) 16" koi, - in a small pond - I just had to many in there and wanted to put some new stock in my large koi pond.

Re: [Koiotic] Pics of Babies [In reply to] Can't Post

The rest of my koi spawned yesterday - July2. I thought that they still had eggs, was hoping. The first spawn I really thought we would only have a few, but at least 500...so this spawn that I was there for - who knows, it seems like there are only a few eggs, but I know that can not be true..
The culprits...Females
Yellow and Black Doitsu - Lady Bug
Yellow Ogon
White and Black Bekko - Nice one with White head - not Tan
and then a large white and black doitsu that I would have bet money was a male....about 20" and very long and lean - always swore was a male....so confusing!!
Males
Doitsu Showa
Sanke -
Matsuba
White with black and silver...
Yellow Ogon....
Couple Whites...one doitsu

My two year old Showa I put in this year was part of the action, so cute to see this 10" thin male taking care of business with a 20" thick Ogon....and the other ones, he was a real go getter....

I really felt like I knew what I was doing this year -
Went like this...(8:00 am)
Started filling up 300 gallon Rubbermaid container with pond water.
Started cutting willow branches
Zip tied about 4 together - put them in pond attached to line so I could get them out easy.
Started pulling out willows and putting in container.
Turned off electric fence...Next time, do this first......
Put large rock in container to hold willows down.
Ran water from pond in container so it was overflowing.
Watched fish and willows and took wiilow out after looked like had a pretty good selection of eggs.
Adding fresh water to pond with sprayer on to keep oxygen levels up.
Left willow in pond (1:00) when I went to work so they could finish there business...
When I got home (6:00) They were finished. Pulled out a couple of the willows, there were still eggs on them.
Put them in container, ran container over again with pond water.
Added a bag of salt.
Next Morning
Turned fence back on...Next time do this the day before....
Emptied pond half way.
Ran container over with water again.
Adding back water on a slow trickle.
Tonight we will move eggs to greenhouse.

This weekend I will vacuum out pond....It smells so gross!!!!
