Pond Tips Winterization- At 70 degrees F, Mix current food with wheat Germ, Divide and repot plants, and perform a 50% water change At 60 degrees F, Feed wheat germ only(I don’t do this), dispose of tropical plants, place net over pond when leaves start to fall (For me this is early) At 50 degrees F, stop feeding fish (or wait until they aren’t hungry) At 45 Degrees F, Trim remaining plants and place in deepest part of pond (trim them off to about 1” above the soil level, you will lose some) At 40 Degrees F, Remove pump, filter, UV, etc; add deicer, aerator, etc If you have a frog, place container of soil on bottom of pond so it can bury Always keep a hole open if the pond freezes over, don’t bang on the ice with a hammer, as the shock waves can damage fish. Instead, heat a pan of warm water, and melt the ice down. If you have a deicer or heater, you don’t have to worry, you can also use a freeze guard. Spring Startup- Feeding: Start to feed at 70 degrees F, or when the fish start being more active. When water reaches 45-50 degrees F, add the pump, filter, UV, etc. Remove the pond net (Unless you have pond predators, leave it) Remove heater If the water gets too warm, put a hose in the pond at a slow trickle, opposite the end where it drains. This will cool it down and keep it cool. Do a 50% water change Move your plants back to where you had them in the fall, add fertilizer if you wish Midseason/Summer- Add some mosquito fish if you live in an area with a mosquito problem May purchase plants, and get back into your normal routine POND FIRST AID KIT: DE-CHLORINATOR, TEST KIT (I DON’T USE), POND SALT, AMMONIA DETOXIFIER, WAY TO GET OXYGEN INTO THE POND PUMP OR AIRATOR, ACTIVATED CARBON OR MEDIA BAG (FOR WHEN YOU ACCIDENTALLY ADD A POISION)
