Possibly redundant question...sorry Can't Post

We have had numerous fish in our pond -- but this spring we had a huge flow of algae strings (ropes) and algae mats and we now have about 2 dozen babies in the pond. I never considered it before...don't know why since my African cichlid raising is always aware of avoiding hybridization...but I recently discovered that koi and goldfish can cross breed. So ... how can I tell which of my fry are goldfish and which are koi? I have some babies that have the similar coloration of the koi parents which make some simple (I hope). But how do I differentiate between koi fry and goldfish fry?

Thanks,

Michael

All koi have barbel or wiskers and koi-golfish cross do not, nore do they have the colouring as koi do.

wait for them to grow a bit and u will notice that the dorsal fin on koi is different and that they will be developing barbels!

Once you start koi you just can't stop.

Re: [linear] Possibly redundant question...sorry [In reply to] Can't Post

I have been watching the fry -- plan on doing some culling this weekend. I do not think I have a situation where the koi eggs are hybidized by goldfish. I think I have goldfish eggs hybridized by koi. I am getting alot of 'goldfish' gold coloured fish which naturally I want to cull. But I do have some that are not growing as fast, with more slender bodies, that have koi colouration. I am hoping these are not hybrid as one has a beautiful white body with orange-red head.

One thing I did notice, though, some of the fish have extremely tiny pectoral fins. I mean to the point of weird. They have large goldfish bodies with fins and tails appropriate for a fish 1/2 it's size. They seem to swim using their tails and one frequently ends up in the overflow filter. Is this an indicator of proof that the goldfish eggs were fertilized by koi?
