Pregnant Koi! What do I do? Can't Post
Unsure Hello everyone... I knew to this. I actually rescued three koi, and am unfamiliar on how to take care of them. But I have an immediate dilemma. I have one pregnant koi, ready to pop any day looks like. I have several questions. 1. do I separate her from the other two... they seem to not leave her alone, following everywhere she goes... 2. do I need a mat of some sort so she can lay her eggs? and should it be in a secluded area, 3. How many can she have? and how long before the eggs hatch? If anyone can help, I would be so appreciative... Angel

Welcome to the forumSmile. Koi are egg layers rather than livebearers, and that is why the other two won't leave her alone. They are trying to agitate her into laying her eggs so they can fertilize them with their miltShocked.

Don't worry if you can't do everything they reccommend as it is a guide for ideal conditions. If you have to make a few adjustments to fit your circumstances it's okWink. After reading it I'm sure you'll have more questions and there are plenty of us more than happy to help.
One last note. Occasionally the female will not be stimulated enough to give up her eggs. (One of mine did that this past spring) If that should happen to be the case, don't worry. Even though she'll look like she's going to explode her body will slowly re-absorb the eggs as protein and all will be well. More than likely she will give them up and then your fun will beginSly.

Just put them together in a seperate tank and let them spawn.Wink
