Preparation for spawning :) Can't Post

Hi Folks!

With the season of Spring (and love making...by the Koi ;)) coming up I'm preparing for my first spawning of both koi, shubunkin, etc.

I currently have the following ready, and seek to know if I need anymore items:

*DIY spawing mat from polyethylene rope twine, tied and hung on curtain rods
*200 watt aquarium heater for a 200 litre container
*200 litre container (plastic), on stand by, several 100 litre styrofoam containers
*Malachite green solution, also contains acriflavine and methylene blue (to use only once in water when eggs are added to prevent the onset of fungus right?)
*Pond awaiting outside :D, 600 litres in capacity. Titan 2000 pump, filter still yet to be bought or made (potentially Hozelock Cyprio Bioforce 2000), and air pump with airstone, currently feeding second pond, rated at 360 litres per hour, dual output, I figure the spawning pond could share the air stone and receive 180 litres per hour?

Is the 600 liters for the fry? If so, you should drain it and refill through a screen to remove insect and insect larvae. Add enough soluble fertilizer to give about 1 milligram per liter of nitrogen (the N in N:P:K). Aerate but don't turn on the pump. It will turn green in about 7-14 days. There will be ciliated protozoans within 10 days and rotifers within about 14 days. Within 30 days, the water may become clear as the rotifers consume all the algae.

Do not put malachite or fungicide in the green water pond.

Ideally, you want to stock the eggs or fry as the rotifer population is growing exponentially. In this way, the fry will have plenty of really good live food available when they are ready to start eating.

Some ponds ''bloom'' faster than others. Sometimes the koi spawn at the appropriate time, sometimes they don't. Timing is everything.

If you have green water, but no zooplankton (rotifers, etc.) you can feed the fry newly hatched brine shrimp. Get some brine shrimp eggs and set up a brine shrimp hatching system. Test it ahead of time so you are sure to have live food on the day the fry start feeding. You will need to hatch 3-5 grams of brine shrimp eggs (cysts) per day for several weeks.

Don't worry about a filter at first. Start doing partial water changes after the first week. You will not need a filter until the fish are large enough to eat dry feed.
