Problem with female koi Can't Post

Last week seems to have been mating time for my koi. This is the first time I've seen my koi mate (I've seen my goldfish before so nothing new), however a problem seems to have surfaced.

As it was the first time with the koi, I could confirm the sexes of my fish. Since last year, one particular fish has been much fatter than the rest. I put this down to greediness at feeding time. However last week I confirmed that this particular fish was a female and also had her fair share of eggs.

The problem is that during the mating process, as the male koi was repeatedly bumping her around, she did not release any eggs (unlike the goldfish which were also participating in another ritual at another end of the pond).

I am therefore suspecting that she cannot release her eggs.

Can I do something to help ? Will this damage the koi ?

Seperate her from the males and put her in a spawning pool, give her a couple of day to rest put some spawning ropes on the edge of the spawning pool and put two males in with her and see if she will release the eggs that way. Get a pool that is around 6 to 7 hundred gallons and the males can work on her good. If you can get her to release the eggs it will be better for her. If she does not release, put the males back in the main pond and let her stay in the spawning pool to rest up for a day and then put her back in the main pond. Most of the time if they dont spawn she will absord her eggs back into her body as protien. She will be ok. I would give it a good try though so you can raise the fry it will be fun.

Wink I think maybe you have just helped ease our minds. We have a 2000 gallon watergarden with 7 KOI in it. One female is so huge she looks about to pop. We know there are males in the pond as we have seen them bump her before. At this time they seem to be ignoring her. We were afraid she could become eggbound or something. I'm glad to know her eggs will be absorbed by her own body if not laid. Does anyone else have anything to say about this? Thanks...we are worried "parents' In Indiana Sly

Hi...wish we could take a picture of her. Our pond is probably 75% covered with lilies, lettuce, hyacinths, etc and we hardly see her the past few days. Hopefully she is under there laying those eggs! What sickness could she have?

She could have kidney problems, buoyancy is a sign of a problem, female koi that are heavy with eggs I would not think would be buoyant. Fat for sure, but not floating fat if you know what I mean. Take her out of the pond and take a pic for us, so we can help you better with this.

Re: [koifishgirl] Problem with female koi [In reply to] Can't Post

I may have misled you. She is not "floating" in buoyancy. She is able to move around, just looks cumbersome. Her belly is distended on both sides and bottom. What if she is pregnant and we capture her? Wouldn't this stress her even more than she is now? We saw her this morning but she is quick enough that she came to eat a bite and disappeared again. There is no way to capture a pic of her unless we get into the pond and disturb the entire setting, including her. Is it a myth or truth about spawning in a full moon? We have one coming up July 21st. Also, what would difference in barometric pressure do, if anything, to encourage spawning? We (HOPEFULLY) have rain coming in from the hurricane about tomorrow and next day.

Thanks!

Yes the full moon and rain will triger a spawn, but for best results it would be good if you can pair them up a couple of males to the one female. If you do this and you take her out of the main pond, make sure that you float her over into a bowl and do not take her out of the water and then place the bowl and her into the spawning pool.
